AUSTRALASIA. Report by Consul-General Spencer, of Melbourne, on the commerce of Australasia for 1882. I herewith transmit a summary statement, just received, of the imports and exports of the several Australasian colonies, exclusive of Western Australia, for the year 1882. as compared with those of 1881, together with a comparative statement of the value of the imports and exports of the colony of Victoria for 1881 and 1882. From the former it will appear that the total value of the imports of Australasia for 1882 was $302,426,822, as compared with $252,289,117 in 1881, showing an increase of nearly 20 per cent. during the year. This increase, although doubtless due in part to over-importation, may be regarded as a striking indication of the rapid growth of Australasian trade. The total value of the exports for 1882 was $241,838,601, as compared with $231,718,685 for 1881, showing an increase of $10,119,916. Since 1879 the Australasian exports have increased nearly 25 per cent. The custom-house returns show that the total value of the imports for Victoria during the year ended December 31, 1882, was $91,237,536, while the exports amounted to $78,806,052. The value of the goods transshipped during the year was $6,492,578. The total amount of revenue collected was $10,123,021, of which the duties on imports and exports produced $8,890,507, and the excise duties $743,061. The number of vessels entered at the various ports of the colony during the year, exclusive of the coasting trade, amounted to 2,089, with an aggregate tonnage of 1,349,093. Of these, 1,625, aggregating 1,222,352 tons, were entered at the port of Melbourne. 14708 C R, PT 2—47 737 |
