IT may be reasonably expected of any tranflator, to give to the Public the motives for his trouble; but the tranflator of BULL'S HARMONIA 'is peculiarly bound fo to do. For that worthy prelate feverely reproached one of his antagonists for replying in English, justly expofing the abfurd vanity of displaying to the unlearned complex difcuffions on points which should have been firft fettled among divines themselves, and whofe promulgation could have no beneficial effect upon the minds of the vulgar. But my excufe and my motive will be found in the times in which we live : times not indeed unprecedented. For with refpect to religious opinions and fects, the fe verish activity of some who are neither avowed diffenters, nor real churchmen, the relaxation of ecclefiaftical difcipline, the amphibious tribe of lecturers attached to no cure, and confidering themselves amenable only to a Right Reverend Father of their own choofing, (see a late Life of Cadogan) the private combinations among fuch A 2 |
