SPANISH DEPENDENCIES.

CANARY ISLANDS.

TENERIFFE, September 25, 1877. (Received October 29.)

DECLINE IN THE EXPORT OF COCHINEAL.

Since my last report, cochineal, the principal export of these islands, has continued to decline in price and demand, until the ruin of these islands is almost complete. In 1876 a much smaller crop of this article was raised, as may be seen in the statement of export herewith inclosed, which shows a difference of 1,545,218 pounds less than the previous year, and of value less $579,456.75. Owing to this short production, the prices rose last autumn in London nearly or quite 50 per cent. This naturally stimulated the cultivation this year to such a degree that we shall probably have as large a production as that of 1875, in anticipation of which prices have fallen steadily in London, and we have now touched a lower price than ever before, 35 cents per pound, with a possibility of a further decline. With the before-named price there will be a loss instead of a gain to the cultivators.

I subjoin a statement of comparison of the crops of the last seven years, showing a falling off between the years 1870–71 and 1876–77 of 2,209,857 pounds, and in value of $1,885,319.25, more than one-half in the latter. Therefore we calculate that importations have declined to the same amount; and while the cultivators in 1870 made large profits, they will have an actual loss in 1876. I also subjoin a comparison of exports of cochineal to the United States for the last five years.

CULTIVATION OF TOBACCO.

The only hope the cultivators have for the future is in the cultivation of tobacco. This goes on increasing slowly but steadily, and it does not increase faster because the curing is not yet generally understood. There is, however, one cultivator in this island who has housed 1,000 quintals this year. The Spanish Government, in order to foster its cultivation, takes all that is produced of good quality at an average price of $22.50 per 100. Last year they took 2,000 quintals and this year will take 5,000 quintals.

It is impossible to obtain any note of the imports and exports, as the government does not pay any attention to this important information. WM. H. DABNEY.
