PREFACE.

IN compiling a Service Book for Children, I have

been guided, as far as is practicable, by the following considerations.

It is unwise to give children prayers and hymns to which they cannot attach at least some meaning. I have, therefore, omitted such prayers and collects as contain expressions beyond the comprehension of the young. But much necessarily remains which requires explanation, and this should always be given before the Services are used. The clergyman may profitably do this when he collects the children on Saturday afternoon to practise the hymns for the following day. They ought to be encouraged to learn the hymns and psalms by heart; and, by repeating or reading them aloud collectively, they will become familiar with the words, and be the better fitted to join heartily in the service.

The Litany, Office No. 2, according to the "Act of Uniformity Amendment Act" (1872), may be used at the afternoon service in any church where there is full morning and evening service; but to use Offices
