O apology can be wanting for ushering into the world a new and elegant edition of the HISTORY OF SIR CHARLES GRANDISON; a work which has received that approbation it juftly deferves, from the most celebrated authors. Many great and learned men have given public teftimony to its merit, but from these we fhall only felect a few.

The right hon. Lord Lyttleton, in his Dialogues of the Dead, p. 318, fays, "In the character of Sir Charles Grandifon is a noble pattern of every private virtue, with fentiments fo exalted as to render him equal to every public duty."

Mr Johnson, author of the Rambler, fpeaks of Mr Richardfon in the following manner: "He has enlarged the knowledge of human nature, and taught the paffions to move at the command of virtue." See No. 97 of the Rambler.

Mr Warton has the following remarkable paffage, relative to a character in Sir Charles Grandifon. "Of all reprefentations of madnefs, that of Clementina, in the Hiftory of Sir Charles Grandifon, is the moft deeply interefting. I know not whether ever the madness of Lear is wrought up and expreffed, by fo many little ftrokes of nature and genuine paffion. It is abfolute pedantry to prefer and compare the madnefs of Oreftes in Euripides to this of Clementina." Warton's Efay on the Writings and Genius of Pope, p. 276.

The reputation of the author of Sir Charles Grandifon is far from being confined to his own country; he has been read in many of the languages, and known to most of the nations in Europe; and has been greatly admired, notwithftanding every diffimilitude of manners, or every difadvantage of tranflation.
