MISSISSIPPI RIVER-MINNEAPOLIS TO LAKE ITASCA Mississippi River rises in central Minnesota in the vicinity of Lake Itasca and flows in a general easterly and southerly direction for about 513 miles to Minneapolis, Minn. (853.0). Between Brainerd (mile 1001) and Grand Rapids (mile 1180) the river has been improved to provide a general depth of 31⁄2 feet, primarily for the passage of rafted timber. The controlling depth in this secton is about 1 foot. This project has been inactive for a number of years and there is no navigable connection with the canalization project below Minneapolis. There are 10 dams above Minneapolis, none of which are provided with locks. Except in the pools of these dams and in the headwater lakes, channel depths are sufficient only for small craft.
