"aflift me dear, dear Sir," cried he, "the prefs-gang are already here, and "I know, I fhall not efcape! For my"felf I should not care; but, my poor, poor mother! fhe will never furvive it. I know fhe wont. Alas! fhe has no fon, but me. Her heart is now "yearning to embrace me. O it will break, if fhe is difappointed!" I gave him time to fay no more, but having haftily emptied a large trunk, made him leap into it, and there detained him, until I was affured that these children of Nareyka had retired. Alas! they did not retire without prey; above thirty of those brave fellows, whofe ufeful labours have conduced to the enrichment, and prosperity of their country; who, after an abfence of twenty months, hopes to reap the reward of their toils, by returning to its bofom, were dragged reluctant victims to the infernal demon of power!

Nor are these the only monsters that infeft the British coaft.-Much apprehenfion is entertained by the feamen, and paffengers, for certain favages, called Cuftom-houfe Officers; who, it feems, are particularly ferocious towards thofe who come from the Eaft.

Praise to the preferving Spirit!-Our watery pilgrimage begins to draw near its clofe. At ten this morning, we caft our anchor, at the diftance of about one cofs from one of the principal Naval Ports in England. All on board is now hurry and confufion, every eye fparkles with the eagerness of expectation, and every heart feems warm, with the thoughts of once more beholding their friends, and their native country; it is the tumult of delight; the dread of the cuftom houfe officers, is forgotten; I fuppofe our fleet was too formidable for thefe favages to dare to make any attack upon it. And now that we are within fight of an English port, we can have nothing to fear. Seeing every one making preparations for going afhore, I retired to fpend an hour at my pen; but the encreafing buftle, renders it impoffible for me to proceed further at present.

On going upon deck, I was furprised to obferve a number of ftrange faces, and anxioufly enquired what kind friends had taken this early opportunity of greeting our arrival?-With aftonishment, I learned, that the ftrangers, were no other than the dreaded custom-houfe officers. In manners, drefs, ftature, and complexion, nay even in language, thefe favages

bear fo ftrong a refemblance to the English, that they might at a flight view, be miftaken for the fame; but, on a more accurate examination of their countenances, evident traces of their favage origin, may be eafily difcerned. They are lefs ferocious than the and feldom murder those who fall into their hands, unless in cafes of refiftance. This they did not meet with from any of us; but, got leave to rifle, rob and plunder, without any hindrance, or moleftation. Their avidity for plunder, though eager beyond defcription, feems to be acquired by the frangeft caprice. On the commodities of Europe they feemed to fet no value; but feized with favage rapacity, on the more elegant productions of the Eaft. In refpect to thefe, the niece of the Dewan, and myself, have been the greatest fufferers. A beautiful piece of filver muflin, which the fair reader of Novels, had treasured up, as her choiceft ornament, and on which, fhe fet a tenfold value, from its being of a fimilar defcription to that which was worn by the Right Hon. Lady Araminta Eleanora Bloomville, on the day of her nuptials; was feized by these relentless barbarians, without remorfe. With a copious flood of tears, fhe be fought them to fpare her favourite robe; but, alas! the fupplica

tions of beauty, touched not the heart of these favage plunderers, who beheld unmoved, the pearly drops, which courfed éach other down the fair one's cheek! my cabin afforded a ftill more ample fhare of plunder. The fhawls, the muTlins, which I intended to have presented to the fifter of Percy: and the less costly, though in the eye of affection, no lefs valuable prefents, which the generofity of Grey, had enabled young Morton to fend his family all, all, were feized, by the unhallowed hands of these ruthlefs fpoilers! Had they taken my whole cheft of gold Mhors, it would not have grieved me half fo much! But, as it is a misfortune, for which I perceive there is no remedy, I must have recourse to that only phyfic of the hopeless-Patience.

From the Queen of the ocean, the favoured Ifland of Great Britain, does the wandering Zaarmilla, now addrefs the most beloved of friends.-Having taken leave of the Captain and officers, and returned, well merited, thanks for their kind attention during our voyage; we went into a boat, which had been fent from the harbour, for the conveyance of the paffengers, and were quickly landed on one of the ghauts of Portsmouth; it is impoffible to convey to your imagination, any notion of the magnificence of the

fpectacle that prefented itself to our view, in this fhort fail. No idea of the fublimity of a fleet of floating fortreffes, can poffibly be conceived by thofe who have not beheld the unequalled fcene. The army of the most powerful Monarch of the Eaft, though numerous as the grains of fand upon the shores of the fea, the duft of the feet of whofe Elephants obfcures the noon-day fun, cannot, in point of grandeur, bear comparison with an af lemblage of thefe glories of the ocean, that ride triumphant in an English port.

We have taken up our prefent abode at a fort of Choultrie, called an Hotel, and are to spend the remainder of the day together. To-morrow, we fhall separate, perhaps, for ever! The lovely widow, in whofe countenance, I fee the emotions of tender recollections ftruggling with that amiable fortitude, which ftrives to repress the feeling of unavailing forrow, purposes going to the houfe of a friend, at a few miles diftance from this place, and there to wait the arrival of her mother. I am to have the happiness of Delomond's company, on my journey to London, which is a very great comfort to me, as I find myself almoft as much at a lofs here, as if I had never beforebeen in an English fettlement. The Dewan has been bufily employed in
