acts of charity, have obtained the bleffing of them, who are ready to perish. Nor is the nourishment of the mind neglected by this wife minifter; the public are informed, in this newspaper, where fuch books are to be had, as are doubtlefs, beft calcu lated for their inftruction. I have already told you, that the females of this place go themselves into the fhops, in order to purchase what they want: and, methinks, it is highly praife-worthy of this good fuperintendant of the kingdom, to point out to the fair creatures, where they may lay out their money to the most advantage. They are in one part, ftrongly affured of the fuperior excellence of the goods at the Pigeons; in another, they are conjured to buy their ftockings at the Fleece; their fhoes, their gloves, nay the very powder, with which they disfigure their beautiful hair, are all objects of this good nobleman's tender anxiety; indeed, the proper decoration of their perfons, feems to employ no inconfiderable portion of his attention; there is no deformity of the body, no diforder of the fkin, against which they are not here. provided with a remedy. Nor doth royal diguity itfelf, difdain to extend its cares to beautitying and adorning the female fubjects of thefe realms. You will, perhaps, finile, to hear of the royal

firman's being attached to the ladies' garters? But there is not a bruth for their nails, nor a foap for their hands, nor a powder for their teeth, nor wafh for their pretty faces, that is not as highly honoured. Alas! how much are thefe females indebted to a prince, who evinces fuch unequalled folicitude for the prefervation. of their beauty!

Nor doth the parental care of royalty for the welfare of the people flop here; their health is an object of peculiar concern; innumerable are the lifts of medicines, of approved efficacy, which are here recommended to the public; I rec.. koned above fixty, that had received the royal fanction, fealed by the royal arms, and mentioned by royal authority; when we reflect, how many naufeous draughts, the royal counsellors muft needs have tafted; how many bitter pills, they, doubtless, muft have swallowed, before they could advise his Majesty on a fubject fo important; we can fcarcely refrain from pitying the fituation of thofe, whofe high ftations impose upon them the performance of fuch difagreeable duties!!-I could furnish you with further proofs of the tender care of this government, for the health and hap pinefs of its fubjects, but am obliged to leave off, on account of my vifit to Sir Caprice Ardent.

I forget whether I informed you, that a neceffary part of my eftablishment, is a carriage. A model of which, I have this morning purchased for you, at what is called a toy-fhop, that you may form fome idea of the manner in which the great are drawn about the streets of this city. Numbers however, even of an exalted rank, occafionally walk: nor is it thought any degradation, to make use of their own legs. I this morning met the leir apparent of the throne, walking on foot, in the very ftreet in which. I live; far from appearing in my eyes as fhorn of his dignity, by thus condefcending to mingle with his people, it fhed upon it, in my opinion, a beam of additional luftre. Ah! what a tranfcendant degree of excellence muft we fuppofe these highly favoured Princes to poffefs, who, together with the dignified fentiments of their exalted rank, enjoy the advantages of that inftruction, which is only to be obtained by commerce with the world! The mirror of truth is fet before them, and, furely, they will never turn from it to view themselves through the diftorting medium of venal flattery, and deceitful adulation!! But, to return from this digref fion; I took up Dr. Severan, according to appointment, and proceeded with him to the house of the Baronet, which is

fituated at the upper end of a fhort ftreet, none of the buildings of which are yet compleated; they feem as if they were intended for houfes of very different fizes and fhapes, and at prefent have a very ftrange appearance; but, it is impoffible to form any idea of what they may be, when finished. The entrance to the house of Sir Caprice, was fomewhat obftructed by heaps of rubbish, occafioned, as we foon learned, by the deftruction of a row of pillars, of Grecian architecture, with which the hall had been originally graced. Thefe proud ornaments, which during the fhort period of their exaltation, had heard the lofty roof which they fuftained, re-echo the voices of their flatterers, were on a fudden, disgraced, difmiffed, and hurled headlong to the ground! Their fall was like that of the favourites of Princes, which fhakes the throne they once appeared deftined to fupport. A loug train of dependants were involved in the mighty ruin, and it was not without fome degree of danger, that, following the fervant, we fcrambled through this fcene of defolation, to the apartment of Sir Caprice, whom we found feated at a large table, on which an innumerable quantity of plans, maps, models of buildings, and other various ornaments, were heap

ed. After reading the letter I had brought him, congratulating me on my arrival in England, and enquiring after the, health of Mr. Grey, he turned to Doctor Severan, and expreffed, in ftrong terms, the particular pleafure he at that Goment felt in feeing him." I know you are a man of tafte," cried he, " and hall be wonderfully happy to have your advice on the plan of a new building, which I intend fhall be fomething very extraordinary. Here it is," continued be, holding up a fmall model; "here, you fee, I have contrived to unite all the orders of architecture in regular gradation; here, you will please to observe, that the bafis is truly Gothic; above that, obferve the Tufcan; above that, the Compofite, the Corinthian, the Doric, the Ionic-all placed as they never were placed before! Still, however, the top is unfinished; for that I have had many plans; but, that which pleases me beft, is, the idea of crowning the whole with a Chinese temple; is it not a good thought, eh? Perhaps this gentleman, could furnish me with a hint. Pray Sir," turning to me, me," has the Emperor of China, done any thing new in this way, of late?" The philofopher, perceiving my confufion, reminded this noble builder, that I was from Bengal, and had never
