keep the vow and covenant betwixt them made, and may ever remain in perfect love and peace together, and live according to thy laws; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ Then shall the Minister join their right hands together, and say, Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder.

NORASMUCH as M. and N. have consented to live together in holy wedlock, and have witnessed the same before God and this company; I pronounce that they be Man and Wife.

The following Exhortation, or some other suitable, may be addressed, by the Minister, to the persons married.

your reason and conscience will approve, touching the duty of husbands towards their wives, and of wives towards their husbands.

Between you perfect sympathy, confidence, and affection should be cherished. Our Lord confirmed the ordinance of his heavenly Father, by which man and wife become one flesh, in the unity of common interests and reciprocal duties. The trials of life should increase your devotedness to each other's welfare; and all its duties faithfully discharged should confirm your mutual love. That your joy may be full, your respective obligations should be performed with diligence, cheerfulness, and fidelity. Your conduct should be pure and correct, and your principles so sound as to increase the stability of your affection, in the daily growth of confidence and respect. Those cares which alternately press upon you, should call forth all your exertions to lighten their pressure; and amidst difficulties and troubles, which none can escape, you should strive to maintain for each other's sake a cheerful, trustful, hopeful spirit.

Nothing will assist you so powerfully, and make your usefulness and happiness so secure, as a firm reliance on divine Providence, a living faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and an intimate participation, acquired in a devotional

life, of his spirit of disinterested heavenly love. In short, AT HOME, to exercise all the benevolence, respect, forbearance, openness, kindness, and integrity, which secure a useful and honoured life ABROAD, will make your dwelling the abode of true happiness and improvement on earth, and of blissful preparation for the joys of the heavenly world: so that when you shall be separated by death, the survivor will have the hope, and the departed the certain knowledge, that in heaven you will be re-united to part no more for ever.

And the Minister shall add this Blessing.

the Lord mercifully with his favour look upon you; and so fill you with all spiritual benediction and grace, that ye may so live together in this life, that in the world to come ye may have life everlasting. Amen.

THE ORDER FOR

THE VISITATION OF THE SICK.

When any person is sick, notice being first given to the Minister, he shall attend at a time convenient to the sufferer and to the afflicted family, to administer the instructions and consolations of religion.

¶ On entering the sick man's room he shall repeat one or more of the following sentences.

PEAC

EACE be to this house, and to all that dwell in it. Our Lord Jesus Christ was sent by his heavenly Father, that he might give repentance and the remission of sins. Acts v. 31.

Repent ye, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out. Acts iii. 19.

God, having raised up Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Acts iii. 26.

In Jesus Christ, "whom God raised from the dead," peace and salvation can be obtained; neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. Acts iv. 10, 12.

The ministers of the gospel are sent unto you that they may know your estate and comfort your hearts. Col. iv. 8.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts xvi. 31.

The Minister and those present shall then kneel and repeat the Lord's prayer.

UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Sick.

LORD, look down from heaven, behold, visit, and relieve this thy servant. Look upon him with the eyes of thy mercy, give him comfort and sure confidence in thee, defend him from distressing though natural fears, and keep him in perpetual peace and safety; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Recovery and Resignation.

EAR us, Almighty and most merciful God and Saviour; extend thy accustomed goodness to this thy servant who is grieved with sickness. Sanctify, we beseech thee, this thy fatherly correction to him; that the sense of his weakness may add strength to his faith, and seriousness to his repentance: That, if it shall be thy good pleasure to restore him to his former health, he may lead the residue of his life in thy fear, and to thy glory: or else, give him grace so to take thy visitation, that, after this painful life ended, he may dwell with thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ¶Then he shall exhort the sick person in this form or in other like, more suitable to the circumstances.

DEARLY is

EARLY beloved, know this, that Almighty God is

the Lord of life and death, and of all things to them pertaining, as youth, strength, health, age, weak

ness, and sickness. Wherefore, whatsoever your sickness is, know you certainly, that it is God's visitation. And for what cause soever this sickness is sent unto you; whether it be to try your patience for the example of others, and that your faith may be found in the day of the Lord laudable, glorious, and honourable, to the increase of glory and endless felicity; or else it be sent unto you to correct and amend in you whatsoever doth offend the eyes of your heavenly Father; know you certainly, that if you truly repent of your sins, and bear your sickness patiently, trusting in God's mercy, through his dear Son Jesus Christ, and render unto him humble thanks for his fatherly visitation, submitting yourself wholly unto his will, it shall turn to your profit, and help you forward in the right way that leadeth unto everlasting life.

If the person visited be very sick, then the Minister may end his exhortation in this place, or else add such exhortation, admonition or consolation as may seem to him necessary or proper.

¶Then shall the Minister enquire whether he repent him truly of his sins and be in charity with all the world; exhorting him to forgive from his heart all persons that have offended him; and if he have offended any other, to ask them forgiveness. These words before rehearsed may be said before the Minister begin his Prayer, as he shall see cause.

Here shall the sick person be moved to make Confession of his sins, if he feel his conscience troubled with any weighty matter. After which Confession, the Minister shall declare to him the provisions of the gospel, to dispel the terrors of death, by the assurance of pardon through Jesus Christ our Lord, to all who truly repent and believe in him.

It must be left to the discretion of the Minister, to select those particulars in these directions which are suitable, and to omit all those which are not.

A Prayer for Forgiveness.

MOST merciful God, who, according to the multitude of thy mercies, dost so put away the sins of those who truly repent, that thou rememberest them no more; open thine eye of mercy upon this thy servant, who most earnestly desireth pardon and forgiveness; renew in him, most loving Father, whatsoever hath decayed by his own carnal will and frailness; preserve and continue this sick member in the service of thy Church;

consider his contrition, accept his tears, assuage his pain, as shall seem to thee most expedient for him; and forasmuch as he putteth his full trust only in thy mercy, impute not to him his former sins, but blot out his transgressions; strengthen him with thy blessed Spirit, and when it shall be thy will to take him hence, may he depart in hope, through thy most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

At the conclusion of the visit the Minister shall say,

HE Almighty Lord, who is a strong tower to all them that put their trust in him, to whom all things in heaven, in earth, and under the earth do bow and obey, be now and ever more thy defence; and make thee know and feel that there is none other name under heaven given to man, in whom and through whom thou mayest receive health and salvation, but only the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

UNTO

After that he shall say,

NTO God's gracious mercy and protection we commit thee. The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The Lord make his face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee, and give thee peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

If the sick person desire to receive the Lord's Supper, the Minister should carefully instruct him that he may not deceive himself, and think that this ordinance will be of any benefit to him, without sincere repentance and faith.

LMIGHTY, everliving God, Maker of mankind, who dost correct those whom thou dost love, and chastise every one whom thou dost receive; We beseech thee to have mercy upon this thy servant visited with thine hand, and to grant that he may take his sickness patiently, and recover his bodily health; (if it be thy gracious will;) assist him in faith to partake of this bread and wine, the memorials of a Saviour's love, and to take comfort from the same; and may the peace of God keep his heart and mind, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

But if the person be very ill, the service may be shortened at the discretion of the Minister.
