THE

YOUTH'S INSTRUCTER

AND

GUARDIAN.

FEBRUARY, 1854.

ARCHBISHOP TILLOTSON.

(With a Portrait.)

BORN in the year 1629, in Yorkshire, his father being a clothier. Died at Lambeth, in 1694, after having been installed Archbishop of Canterbury about three years. He never forgot nor was ashamed of his humble origin; nor is it known that after his elevation he ever said or did a thing for which his successors in that dignity might have reason to be ashamed of him.

In a prayer he wrote the day before his consecration to the archbishopric, he rendered thanks to God for having been born of honest and pious parents, although humble and obscure. Although they possessed but scanty means, they gave him a good education; and it was his delight, in afterlife, to give proof of gratitude to his honoured parents, and be as a father to their other children. He was educated as a Presbyterian; but a work of Dr. Chillingworth convinced him of the superior claims of Episcopacy, and induced him to join the Church of England, yet retaining undiminished respect and affection towards those whose communion he had felt it right to leave.

Under the blessing of God, his true piety, learning, and chaste eloquence won him general esteem; and his writings, VOL. XVIII. Second Series.
