L'ARC EN CIEL.

Ce tableau, remarquable par le mérite de la composition et par de beaux effets de clair-obscur, a toujours été regardé comme un des meilleurs paysages de Rubens; on croit qu'il a été fait pour la reine Marie de Médicis. Un orage prêt à fondre sur une campagne vient de se dissiper; la nuée a été repoussée vers l'horizon; le soleil reparaît et produit ce brillant effet de couleurs que les poëtes ont nommé l'écharpe d'Iris. Assis au pied d'un chêne, un vieux pasteur paraît chanter tandis que ses brebis se reposent. Un jeune berger accourt avec sa compagne pour l'entendre, tandis qu'un autre, couché sur le gazon auprès d'une jeune femme, paraît occupé de tout autre chose. Le soleil frappe presque perpendiculairement le groupe du centre, tandis que des ombres sont rejetées sur les parties latérales. Cet effet est d'autant plus piquant, que le groupe, sur lequel frappe la lumière du soleil, se trouve en opposition avec le nuage placé à droite du tableau. Le grand bouquet d'arbres est éclairé avec beaucoup d'habileté. Peut-être bien y a-t-il un peu de mollesse dans quelques détails, mais plusieurs parties sont peintes avec chaleur.

On assure qu'il existe deux copies de ce tableau, par Doyen. Il a été gravé par Schelte de Bolswert et par Gareau. Larg., 5 pieds 3 pouces; haut., 3 pieds 9 pouces.

THE RAINBOW.

This picture, remarkable for the merit of its composition and the beautiful effects of the light and shade, has always been considered as one of Rubens, best landscapes: it is thought to have been painted for Queen Marie de Médicis. A storm that had gathered over a country place, has cleared away: the clouds have been driven towards the horizon: the sun appears again, and produces that brilliant effect, called by poets, Iris' Scarf. Seated at the foot of an oak, an old shepherd appears to be singing, whilst his sheep are resting. A young shepherd hastens with his female companion to hear him; whilst another, lying on the grass near a young woman, seems otherwise engaged. The sun strikes almost perpendicularly on the center group, while the shadows are thrown back on the lateral parts. The effect is the more pleasing as the group upon which the sun's rays dart, contrasts with the cloud on the right of the picture. The large tuft of drees is very skilfully illumined. Perhaps there is a little want of spirit in some of the details, but several parts are painted with warmth.

It is asserted that there exist two copies by Doyen of this picture. It has been engraved by Schelte of Bolswert, and by -Gareau.
