NOEL COYPEL..

a

Noel Coypel born in 1628, was placed by his father at a painter's named Poncet, living at Orleans. This artist, pupil of Vouet, being greatly afflicted with the gout, gave Coypel the direction of all his affairs. The young pupil left his master, who by his illness could learn him nothing, and came to Paris at the age of 14. Going into the Jacobins' Church, in Saint-Honoré street, he found there Quillerier employed in painting the chapel of Saint-Hyacinthe; he became his pupil.

Noel Coypel was some time after employed by Charles Errard who worked at the Louvre, and was soon renowned. In 1660, he married Madeleine Herault, the daughter of a painter, and in 1663, he presented himself to the Academy where he was admitted on the following year. He was commissioned to make a picture for the May of Notre-Dame, and he afterwards made the ceiling of the machinery-hall at the Tuileries which was in the place where the theatre now is. He also painted the ceiling of the audience-hall of the parliament of Britain, as also that of the guard-room at the Royal-Palace; and he at length got the direction of Paintings in the King's apartments at the Tuileries.

In 1672, Ncel Coypel was named director of the Academy of France at Rome. On his return, he was commanded to paint the ceiling of the council-hall at the castle of Versailles, as also part of the paintings of the dome of the Invalides.

Noel Coypel died at Paris in 1707, aged 79, he was buried in the church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois.
