SUR CLAUDE GAUTHEROT. Claude Gautherot naquit à Paris vers 1775. Élève de David, il exposa au salon de 1800 un tableau représentant Pyrame et Thisbé. Ce qui contribua le plus à faire remarquer son ta lent est une composition du convoi d'Atala, exposé au salon de 1802. On vit dans la même année un portrait du savant mathématicien Fourrier, alors préfet du département de l'Isère. Depuis Gautherot exposa, en 1808, un allocution de l'Empereur, et, en 1810, l'Empereur blessé devant Ratisbonne, ainsi que l'entrevue de Napoléon et d'Alexandre sur le Niémen. Lors de la restauration Gautherot fut chargé de faire, pour la chapelle des Tuileries, un tableau représentant saint Louis pansant des pestiférés. Il peignit ensuite pour M. Cazotte fils un sujet des plus dramatiques, et qu'il rendit avec beaucoup de sentiment: c'est l'acte de dévouement et d'héroïsme de Élisabeth Cazotte, qui pour sauver la vie de son père à l'Abbaye eut le courage de s'abreuver du sang que d'atroces cannibales lui présentèrent au sortir de la prison. Gautherot, atteint depuis plusieurs années d'une maladie dartreuse, qui lui causa de longues douleurs, finit par succomber en 1825. NOTICE 7. NOTICE OF CLAUDE GAUTHER OT. Claude Gautherot born at Paris, about the year 1775, was a pupil of David. He exposed at the Museum in 1800, a picture representing Pyrame and Thisbe. What contributed the most to the enhancing of his talent is a composition of the funeral of Atala exhibited at the Muséum in 1802. There was seen in the same year the portrait of the learned mathematician Fourrier, who was then a prefet of the department of Isère. Afterwards Gautherot exhibited in 1808, a speech of the Emperor, and in 1810 the Emperor wounded at Ratisbonne, as also the interview of Napoléon, and Alexander on the Niemen. On the restauration, Gautherot was ordered to make for the chapel of the Tuileries a picture representing SaintLouis attending the healing of the pestiferous. He afterwards painted for M. Cazotte junior a most dramatic subject, which he rendered full of sentiment: it is the devoted heroick act of Elizabeth Cazotte, who to save her father's life at Saint-Germain's Abbey was so courageous as to drink the blood those atrocious cannibals offered her in coming out of the prison. Since several years Gautherot was afflicted with a tetterdisease which gave him long and smart pain which he at length sank under in 1828. |
