CHESTER A. ARTHUR.' TRIAL OF GARFIELD'S ASSASSIN. Because of the enormity of the offense involved, the trial of Charles J. Guiteau for the assassination of Garfield was a very lengthy and carefu affair. Although Garfield died on September 19, 1881, Guiteau was not finally declared guilty by a jury in the Washington courts until January 25, 1882. Guiteau, a disappointed office-seeker, was very abusive during the trial, and every effort was made to show that he was insane, but unsuccessfully. He was hanged on June 30, 1882. |
