ASSOMPTION DE LA VIERGE.

La piété des fidèles les ayant portés à honorer le moment où le corps de la Vierge fut enlevé au ciel, un grand nombre de peintres ont eu à représenter ce sujet. Quelques-uns l'ont répété plusieurs fois. Rubens en a fait neuf compositious différentes. La plus célèbre est celle qu'il peignit en 1642 , pour le maître-autel de l'église Notre-Dame d'Anvers, ou on la voit encore. Suivant une tradition assez ordinaire , Rubens a placé sur le devant, les apôtres réunis autour du tombeau de la Vierge, où ils ne trouvèrent plus qu'un linceul et quelques fleurs.

L'éclat éblouissant de cet admirable tableau a quelque chose de magique. Les tons les plus chauds et les plus vigoureux s'allient merveilleusement aux teintes les plus suaves et les plus délicates. L'effet en est d'autant plus surprenant que l'on y trouve pourtant peu d'opposition de lumière et d'ombre ; mais la perspective aérienne est portée au plus haut point. Les draperies sont riches et grandement jelees; le dessin est pur; l'expression est des plus nobles et les caractères de têtes montrent une grande profondeur de pensée.

Ce tableau , cintré par le haut, fut peint, dit-on, en seize jours, et fut payé 3,500 fr. à Rubens. Il a été gravé, par Schelte,

graveur, né à Bolswert. Haut., 15 pieds ; larg., 9 pieds 9 pouces.

The moment when the Virgin's body was taken up into heaven, being marked with peculiar devotion in the church, this event has.employed the pencils of a great number of painters; and of several of them repeatedly ; Rubens alone

; composed nine pictures on this subject. The most celebrated among them is that painted in 1642, for the great altar of Notre-Dame of Antwerp. Pursuant to a common tradition, Rubens has represented, in the fore-ground, the Apostles assembled round the Virgin's tomb, in which they discover only the winding-sheet, and a few flowers.

There is something magical in the dazzling brilliancy of this admirable picture, in which the warmest and most vigorous tones are blended with the sweetest and most delicate tints : the effect is the more astonishing, as there is little opposition of light and shade; but the aerial perspective is carried to the highest pitch of perfection. The draperies are rich, and cast in a grand style ; the drawing is pure; the expression, extremely noble; and the character of the heads, indicative of great depth of thought.

The top of this picture is arched. It is said that it was painted in sixteen days, and that the price paid for it was 140 pounds (3,500 fr.). It has been engraved by Schelte, an able artist born at Bolswert.
