Après des conquêtes si rapides qu'elles semblaient être une simple marche militaire. L'empereur Napoléon vint , avec la grande armée, investir la ville de Vienne. S'étant arrêté à Schoënbrun, les officiers municipaux de la capitale de l'Autriche, le clergé de cette grande ville, et les genėraux commandant la garnison, vinrent en cortège lui en offrir les clefs.

Napoléon est accompagné de ses officiers généraux, Murat, Berthier, Bessières , et de plusieurs autres dont les portraits sont ressemblants et remplis de noblesse. Le côté gauche est occupé par un groupe très-pittoresque, par la variété des personnages dont il se compose. On y remarque surtout une paysanne d'une grande beauté.

Le fond du tableau indique bien le lieu de la scène, c'est la représentation de l'entrée de Scboënbrun ; sur le haut de la montagne, qui sert de point de vue, on aperçoit une construction qui porte le singulier nom de Gloriette.

Ce beau tableau , qui fait beaucoup d'honneur à Girodet , se voit maintenant dans la grande galerie du Musée ; il fit partie de l'exposition de 1808. Lors des prix décennaux, il fut jugé digne d'une mention honorable. Il a été gravé par Pigeot.

After a series of conquests achieved with the rapidity of a simple march, the Emperor Napoleon, at the head of the grand army, invested Vienna. Having halted at Schoenbrun, the municipal officers of the Austrian capital, with the clergy and the commanders of the garrison, came in procession to present him the keys.

Napoleon is accompanied by his generals, Murat, Berthier, Bessieres and others; whose portraits are good likenesses, and of a noble character. The left side of the picture is occupied by a group, extremely picturesque from the variety of persons that compose it : among them, is a female peasant of extraordinary beauty.

The back-ground shews the scene to be the entrance of Schoepbrun : on the eminence which is supposed to the point of view, is an edifice bearing the singular name of Gloriette.

This fine picture is now in the great gallery of the Museum. It was exhibited in 1808, and obtained an honorable mention, at the distribution of the decennal prizes : it has been engraved by Pigeot. Width, 15 feet 11 inches; height, 10 feet 7 inches.
