Antoine Allegri, dit Corrège, s'est particulièrement distingué par la grâce qu'il donnait à ses ouvrages. On en trouve ici un exemple des plus parfaits. Le coloris est aussi trèsremarquable par son ton suave et délicat. Quoique peint à l'huile, on a pris, pour ce tableau , la même précaution que pour celui de la Madeleine, de la Galerie de Dresde , et il a été mis sous glace. Il appartenait autrefois au roi d'Espagoe, et se voit maintenant dans la galerie nationale à Londres. Une répétition de ce tableau faisait partie de l'ancienne galerie d'Orléans , et fut du petit nombre de ceux qui ne passèrent pas en Angleterre.

Le panier que l'on aperçoit sur le devant lui a fait donner le nom de Vierge au Panier ; on l'a aussi désigné sous le nom de Vierge au Raboteur, à cause de la figure de saint Joseph, que l'on voit dans le fond, occupé à faire de la me. nuiserie : mais ce serait un inconvénient de lui conserver celte dénomination , parce qu'alors on pourrait le confondre avec le tableau du Carrache, qui porte le même nom , et que nous avons déjà donné sous le no. 763. The characteristic beauty of Corregio's works is grace. Of this we have one of the most perfect examples in the picture before us; which is also remarkable for sweetness and delicacy of colouring. Though painted in oil, it has been glazed, like the Magdalen of the Dresden Gallery.

This picture formerly belonged to the King of Spain, and it is now in the National Gallery of London. A copy of it by the artist pertained to the ancient Orleans Gallery, and was among the small number of pieces of that collection which were not carried to England.

The basket in the foreground has procured this picture the name of the Virgin au Panier (Virgin with the basket ); it has also been called the Virgin au Raboteur ( Virgin with the man planing ), from the figure of St. Joseph, who is seen plying his trade in the back-ground. The latter denomination is objectionable , as exposing this picture to be confounded with that of Caracci, no. 763, which bears the same name.
