LA FORTUNE.

Il n'est pas de divinité dont le culte ait été plus généralement répandu que celui de la Fortune; chez les Romains elle avait plusieurs temples avec des qualifications différentes. Maintenant encore il n'est personne qui ne sacrifie à la Fortune d'une manière ou d'une autre.

Le Guide , en représentant la Fortune, n'a pas suivi l'iconologie moderne qui la place debout sur une roue, avec un bandeau sur les yeux : il l'a peinte sous la figure d'une belle femme, planant sur le monde, tenant d'une main un sceptre et des palmes, et de l'autre une couronne qu'elle parait faire pirouetter entre ses doigts; ce qui semblerait indiquer que les royaumes mêmes sont souvent un jouet de la fortune. Cette idée aurait pu paraitre hasardée autrefois, mais de nos jours elle a reçu si souvent son application qu'elle semble maintenant toute naturelle. L'enfant ailé qui la suit et la saisit par les cheveux ne peut être l'Amour, puisqu'il n'en porte pas les attributs; c'est le Génie de la Fortune qui fait tous ses efforts pour la fixer.

Ce tableau, d'un dessin gracieux et élégant, est également recommandable par une couleur des plus vraies et des plus fraîches.

There is no divinity whose worship has been more generally diffused than that of Fortune : among the Romans she had several temples, under different names; and at the present day, there is no person but, in some way or other, sacrifices to Fortune.

In representing Fortune, Guido has not adopted the modern image, which is a female standing on a wheel, with a bandage over her eyes; he has depicted her under the form of a beautiful woman, hovering over the earth, and holding in one hand a sceptre and palms, and in the other a crown, which she twirls between her fingers, as if to intimate that kingdoms themselves are the play-things of Fortune : this idea might have appeared unwarrantably bold in former times ; but the examples have been so numerous in our day, that it now seems quite natural.

The winged child that follows the Goddess, and seizes her by the hair, is not Love ; having none of the attributes of that Deity ; it is the Genius of Fortune, striving to fix her.
