commandment of God by the traditions of

THEN came together unto him the Pharisees, A. D. 32. and certain of the scribes, which came from Je2 rusalem. And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with 3 unwashen, hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the 4 elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen 5 vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat 6 bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, "Well hath Esaias prophesied "of you hypocrites, as it is written, a This peo- a Is. 29. 13. ple honoureth me with their lips, but their

67. He healeth the daughter of a Syrophenician

woman.

AND from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but 25 he could not be hid. For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of 26 him, and came and fell at his feet: the woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the M". 15. devil out of her daughter. But he answered her 23 not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she 24 crieth after us. But he answered and said, "Let M*.7.27" the children first be filled: for it is not meet "to take the children's bread, and to cast it M". 15. “unto the dogs." And she said, Truth, Lord: 27 yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from 28 their masters' table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, "O woman, great is thy faith: "be it unto thee even as thou wilt." And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

68. He restoreth a man to hearing and speech.

AND again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. 32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they 33 beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touch34 ed his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, "Ephphatha," that 35 is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were aIs.35.5,6. opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed,

And he charged them that M*. 7. they should tell no man: but the more he 36 charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure 37 astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

And he com- 35 manded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves and the 36 1 Sam. 9. fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were 37 filled and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven 2 baskets full. And they that 38 did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. And he sent away the multi- 39 tude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala and Dalmanutha.

22.

THE Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, A. D. 32. and tempting desired him that he would shew * 1 Cor. 1. 2 them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, "When it is evening, ye say, "It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3" And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; “but can ye not discern the signs of the times? 4" A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh "after a sign; and there shall no sign be given "unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas."
