V. This Ordinance shall commence and be in force from and after the passing thereof, and all Ordinances and parts of Ordinances coming within the purview of this, shall be and the same are hereby repealed.

An Ordinance to amend the Ordinances concerning the Of ficers of the Corporation.

I. Be it ordained by the Common Council of the Borough of Norfolk, That each and every officer, who is or shall be appointed by the Common Council, and every person holding an appointment under the said Common Council, shall, before he enters upon the discharge of his office or appointment, receive from under the hand of the Register, a certificate of his appoint- Oath. ment, and shall take an oath before the Mayor or some Alderman of the Borough, faithfully to discharge the duties of his said office or appointment, a certificate of which shall be lodged with the Register. And if any person holding, or who hereafter shall hold such office or appointment, shall fail to produce such certificate to the said Register within ten days after such appointment or election to office, it shall be the duty of the Register to report such failure, at the first meeting of the Common Council after such failure, who shall thereupon declare the said office or appointment to be vacated. And if any such person, failing to comply herewith, shall exercise any of the duties of the said

office or appointment, he shall forfeit and pay to the Corporation, the sum of twenty dollars, for every such offence, to be recovered by warrant, before the Mayor, or any Alderman of said Borough.

And every such person who shall fail to comply with this provision for the space of ten days after his election or appointment, shall incur the same penalties and be subject to the same forfeitures as are prescribed in the first section hereof.

III. And be it further ordained, That the Register of the Corporation, shall within ten days after his election and before he enters upon the discharge of his duties, give a bond, with security to be approved by the Mayor and President of the Common Council; which said bond shall be lodged with the clerk of the Borough Court of Norfolk, under the forfeitures and penalties prescribed in the first section of this Ordi

nance.

IV. All Ordinances and parts of Ordinances coming within the purview of this Ordinance, shall be and the same are hereby repealed.

V. This Ordinance shall commence and be in force from and after the passing thereof.

Preamble.

PAUPERS.

An Ordinance relative to the Interment of Paupers.

(Passed Nov. 16, 1821.)

Whereas, divers impositions have been practiced within this Corporation as to the value of estates of deceased persons, by reason whereof the Corporation has been charged with the cost and expenses of interring sundry persons where estates have been subsequently discovered to have been sufficient to defray

their own funeral charges and expenses, for remedy whereof,

1. Be it ordained by the Common Council of the Borough of Norfolk in Common Hall assembled, That the following persons and no others, to wit: The Inspector, the Coroner, and any one of the Overseers of the Poor, shall have power to issue orders to the public undertaker for the interment of Paupers.

II. Be it also ordained, That in cases where doubts shall exist as to the sufficiency of any decedent's estate to defray the necessary funeral charges and expenses, affidavit shall be made before some Alderman of this Corporation and exhibited to some one of the persons authorised as aforesaid, to issue the aforesaid orders, that such decedent died without having in possession, or being entitled to any property, effects, or estate of any kind whatsoever, out of which the costs of his or her interment might be satisfied.

III. PAVING.

An Ordinance to regulate the Paving and keeping in repair, and to prevent obstructions in the Streets of the Borough of Norfolk.

I. Be it Ordained by the Common Council of the Borough of Norfolk, in Common Hall assembled, That it shall be the duty of the Inspector of the Corporation to inquire into the subject matter of all applications to the Hustings Court and Common Council, for the regulating, paving or otherwise improving of the streets or wharves, and to report to the Court and Common Council the particular state of the circumstances of each case.
