Masthead Lights

A steam vessel when under way shall carry-(a) On or in front of the foremast, or if a vessel without a foremast, then in the fore part of the vessel, at a height above the hull of not less than 20 feet, and if the breadth of the vessel exceeds 20 feet, then at a height above the hull not less than such breadth, so, however, that the light need not be carried at a greater height above the hull than 40 feet, a bright white light, so constructed as to show an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 20 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light 10 points on each side of the vessel, namely, from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on either side, and of such a character as to be visible at a distance of at least 5 miles.

Art 2 (a)

INLAND

A steam vessel when under way shall carry-(a) On or in the front of the foremast, or if a vessel without a foremast, then in the fore part of the vessel, a bright white light so constructed as to show an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 20 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light 10 points on each side of the vessel, namely, from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on either side, and of such a character as to be visible at a distance of at least 5 miles.

GREAT LAKES

Except in the cases hereinafter expressly provided for, a steam vessel when under way shall carry: On or in front of the foremast, or if a vessel without a foremast, then in the fore part of the vessel, at a height above the hull of not less than 20 feet, and if the beam of the vessel exceeds 20 feet, then at a height above the hull not less than such beam, so, however, that such height need not exceed 40 feet, a bright white light so constructed as to show an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 20 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light 10 points on each side of the vessel, namely, from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on either side, and of such character as to be visible at a distance of at least 5 miles: Provided, however, That such vessels built to navigate the New York State Barge Canal or other similar canals where the bridges prevent them from carrying the headlight at the height prescribed herein, shall carry such headlight not less than 20 feet above the hull.

Rule 3a

WESTERN RIVERS

All ocean-going steamers, and steamers carrying sail, shall, when under way, carry—at the foremast head, a bright white light, of such a character as to be visible on a dark night, with a clear atmosphere, at a distance of at least 5 miles, and so constructed as to show a uniform and unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 20 points of the compass, and so fixed as to throw the light 10 points on each side of the vessel, namely, from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on either side.

Side Lights

On the starboard side a green light so constructed as to show an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 10 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on the starboard side, and of such a character as to be visible at a distance of at least 2 miles.

Art. 2 (b)

On the port side a red light so constructed as to show an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 10 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on the port side, and of such a character as to be visible at a distance of at least 2 miles.

Art. 2 (c)

The said green and red side lights shall be fitted with inboard screens projecting at least 3 feet forward from the light, so as to prevent these lights from being seen across the bow.

INLAND

Art. 2 (d)

On the starboard side a green light so constructed as to show an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 10 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on the starboard side, and of such a character as to be visible at a distance of at least 2 miles.

Art. 2 (b)

On the port side a red light so constructed as to show an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 10 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on the port side, and of such a character as to be visible at a distance of at least 2 miles.

Art. 2 (c)

The said green and red side lights shall be fitted with inboard screens projecting at least 3 feet forward from the light, so as to prevent these lights from being seen across the bow.

Art. 2 (d)

On the starboard side, a green light, so constructed as to throw an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 10 points of the compass, so fixed as to throw the light from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on the starboard side, and of such a character as to be visible at a distance of at least 2 miles.

Rule 3 (c)

The said green and red lights shall be fitted with inboard screens projecting at least 3 feet forward from the light, so as to prevent these lights from being seen across the bow.

WESTERN RIVERS

Rule 3 (d)

On the starboard stide, a green light, of such a character as to be visible on a dark night, with a clear atmosphere, at a distance of at least 2 miles, and so constructed as to show a uniform and unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 10 points of the compass, and so fixed as to throw the light from right ahead to 2 points abaft of the beam on the starboard side.

Rule 3 (B)

On the port side, a red light, of such a character as to be visible on a dark night, with a clear atmosphere, at a distance of at least 2 miles, and so constructed as to show a uniform and unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 10 points of the compass, and so fixed as to throw the light from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on the port side.

The green and red lights shall be fitted with inboard screens, projecting at least 3 feet forward from the lights, so as to prevent them from being seen across the bow.

Rule 3 (C)

River steamers navigating waters flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, and their tributaries, shall carry the following lights, namely: One red light on the outboard side of the port smoke pipe, and one green light on the outboard side of the starboard smoke pipe. Such lights shall show both forward and abeam on their respective sides.

Rule 6

All steam vessels, other than oceangoing steamers and steamers carrying sail, shall, when under way, carry on the starboard and port sides lights of the same character and construction and in the same position as are prescribed for side lights by rule 3, except in the case provided in rule 6.

Rule 5

All steamers having but one chimney, except ferryboats provided for in § 332.14, navigating rivers whose waters flow into the Gulf of Mexico and their tributaries, and the Red River of the North, shall carry a green light on the starboard side and a red light on the port side, on brackets securely fastened to the outboard sides. of the chimney, the lights to show both forward and abeam on their respective sides.
