STEAM VESSELS UNDERWAY

Range Lights

A steam vessel when under way may carry an additional white light similar in construction to the light mentioned in subdivision (a). These two lights shall be so placed in line with the keel that one shall be at least 15 feet higher than the other, and in such a position with reference to each other that the lower light shall be forward of the upper one. The vertical distance between these lights shall be less than the horizontal distance.

Art. 2 (e)

INLAND

A seagoing steam vessel when under way may carry an additional white light similar in construction to the light mentioned in subdivision (a). These two lights shall be so placed in line with the keel that one shall be at least 15 feet higher than the other, and in such a position with reference to each other that the lower light shall be forward of the upper one. The vertical distance between these lights shall be less than the horizontal distance.

Art. 2 (e) All steam vessels (except seagoing vessels and ferryboats) shall carry a central range of two white lights, the after light being carried at an elevation at least 15 feet above the light at the head of the vessel. The headlight shall be so constructed as to show an unbroken light through 20 points of the compass; namely, from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on either side of the vessel, and the afterlight so as to show all around the horizon.

GREAT LAKES

A steamer of over 150 feet register length shall carry also, when under way, a bright white light so fixed as to throw the light all around the horizon, and of such character as to be visible at a distance of at least 3 miles. Such light shall be placed in line with the keel at least 15 feet higher from the deck and more than 75 feet abaft the light mentioned in subdivision (a); or in lieu thereof two such lights of the same character and height as herein described placed not over 30 inches apart horizontally, one on either side of the keel, and so arranged that one or the other or both shall be visible from any angle of approach.

Rule 3e

WESTERN RIVERS

All coasting steam vessels, and steam vessels other than ferryboats and vessels otherwise expressly provided for, navigating the bays, lakes, rivers, or other inland waters of the United States, except those mentioned in rule 6, shall carry the red and green lights, as prescribed for oceangoing steamers; and, in addition thereto, a central range of 2 white lights, the after light being carried at an elevation of at least 15 feet above the light at the head of the vessel. The headlight shall be so constructed as to show a good light through 20 points of the compass, namely, from right ahead to 2 points abaft the beam on either side of the vessel; and the after light so as to show all around the horizon. The lights for ferryboats, barges, and canal boats when in tow of steam vessels, shall be regulated by such rules as the Board of Supervising Inspectors of Steam Vessels shall prescribe.

Rule 7

SAIL VESSELS UNDERWAY

INTERNATIONAL

A sailing vessel under way and any vessel being towed shall carry the same lights as are prescribed by article two for a steam vessel under way, with the exception of the white lights mentioned therein, which they shall never carry.

Art. 5

INLAND

A sailing vessel under way and any vessel being towed, except barges, canal boats, scows, and other vessels of nondescript type, when in tow of steam vessels, shall carry the same lights as are prescribed by article 2 for a steam vessel under way, with the exception of the white lights mentioned therein, which they shall never carry.

Art. 5

Note: The effect of this article is to require the carrying of the red and green colored side lights on the port and starboard side respectively.

GREAT LAKES

A sailing vessel under way and any vessel being towed shall carry the side lights mentioned in rule 3.

Rule 6

WESTERN RIVERS

Sail vessels, under way or being towed, shall carry the same lights as steam vessels under way, with the exception of the white masthead lights, which they shall never carry.

VESSELS TOWING

(Other Than Rafts)

A steam vessel when towing another vessel shall, in addition to her side lights, carry two bright white lights in a vertical line one over the other, not less than 6 feet apart and when towing more than one vessel shall carry an additional bright white light 6 feet above or below such lights, if the length of the tow measuring from the stern of the towing vessel to the stern of the last vessel towed exceeds 600 feet. Each of these lights shall be of the same construction and character, and shall be carried in the same position as the white light mentioned in article 2 (a), excepting the additional light, which may be carried at a height of not less than 14 feet above the hull.

Such steam vessel may carry a small white light abaft the funnel or aftermast for the vessel towed to steer by, but such light shall not be visible forward of the beam.

Art. 3

INLAND

A steam vessel when towing another vessel or vessels alongside shall, in addition to her sidelights, carry two bright white lights in a vertical line, one over the other, not less than 3 feet apart, and when towing one or more vessels astern, regardless of the length of the tow, shall carry an additional bright white light 3 feet above or below such lights: Provided, That on the Red River of the North and the rivers emptying into the Gulf of Mexico and their tributaries, this article shall not affect the signal lights used on towing vessels which propel the tow by pushing at the rear of the tow. Each of these lights shall be of the same construction and character, and shall be carried in the same position as the white light mentioned in article 2 (a) or the after range light mentioned in article 2 (f).

Such steam vessel may carry a small white light abaft the funnel or aftermast for the vessel towed to steer by, but such light shall not be visible forward of the beam.
