Haut., 9 pieds 6 pouces ; larg., 8 pieds 4 pouces.

MATHIEU MOLÉ INSULTED.

Sixty years after the first barricades, which were made in Paris under the reign of Henri III, they were renewed in 1648 under Louis XIV. On the 26 august of that year, the queen caused the président de Blanc-Ménil and the counsellor Broussel, to be arrested. The parliament of Paris, headed by president Molé, and habited in red robes, repaired to the PalaisRoyal to demand the liberty of the two prisoners. Having failed in this object, the magistrates were returning to their palace to deliberate on what they should do, when their progress was impeded at one of those barricades by a formidable mob. An iron merchant, captain of the quarter, seized the president by the arm, and threatened to shoot him unless he obtained the release of Broussel. The magistrate meanwhile betrayed no sign of emotion, nor did he even turn aside the murderous weapon, but replied with the utmost coolness: all I shall want is six feet of earth. >>
