Les tableaux de Claude Lorrain sont ordinairement une simple imitation de la nature, ou au moins un souvenir auquel le peintre a fait quelques légers changemens; aussi est-ce la couleur qui en fait presque tout le charme. Cependant si on ne peut vanter le génie du peintre relativement à la composition de son ouvrage, on peut au moins prendre pour modèle la pureté de son goût, qui lui a fait choisir un site agréable, en l'embellissant d'une chute d'eau, dont l'effet paraît d'autant plus brillant qu'elle est entourée d'arbres touffus. Le troupeau de chèvres qu'il a mis sur le devant anime la scène d'une manière très pittoresque. Ce tableau, peint en 1641, a été gravé en 1742 par Vivarès à cette époque il faisait partie du cabinet de lord Jacques Cavendish. : Larg., 2 pieds 7 pouces ; haut., 1 pied 10 pouces. The pictures of Claude Lorrain are usually a simple imitation of nature, or at least a reminiscence with some slight alterations of the painter; thus almost the whole charm consists in the colouring. However if the painter's genius cannot be extolled in respect to the composition of his work, yet, at least, we may cite as a model the purity of his taste, which led him to select an agreeable prospect, embellished by a water-fall, the fine effect of which is heightened from being surrounded by thickly-foliaged trees. The herd of goats he has placed in the foreground gives a very pleasant animation to the scene. The picture was painted in 1641, and engraved in 1742 by Vivarès: at which period it belonged to the collection of lord James Cavendish. Breadth, a feet 9 inches; height, 1 foot 11 inches. |
