SUSANNAH AT THE BATH.

The history of Susannah, daughter of Helcias and wife of Joachim, who was beautiful and feared God, is well known; it is also known that imagining herself alone in her husband's garden, she was surprised by two old men who came to her and said: « Behold the garden doors are shut, that no man can see us, and we are in love with thee; therefore consent unto us, and lie with us. If thou wilt not, we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee.

Santerre has adhered to the text of the scriptures, and represents Susannah in all her charms; he shows her just stepping into the bath and depicts her alarm on hearing a noise, and her modesty that leads her to cover herself with what garments she has at hand. The old men, gazing at her with eager eyes, seem to dread to accost her, and appear to be consulting on what they shall say to her.

As Santerre designed and executed slowly, we have very few pictures by him; the present gives us a favourable idea of his talents; if the design has not all the purity of the antique, there is in the attitude a graceful and enchanting simplicity; the colouring, though not very bright, is soft, and the high finish is by no means prejudicial to the truth of the composition.

Porporati took from this picture an engraving which is highly admired, and which led to his reception as a member of the Paris academy, an honour which the painter also derived from his picture.

SUSANNE AU BAIN.

Chacun se rappelle l'histoire de Susanne, fille de Helcias et femme de Joachim, laquelle était parfaitement belle et craignait Dieu; on sait aussi que, se croyant seule dans le jardin de son mari, elle fut surprise par deux vieillards qui arrivèrent à elle en lui disant : « Les portes du jardin sont fermées, personne ne nous voit, et nous avons de l'affection pour vous; rendez-vous donc à notre désir, et faites ce que nous voulons : si vous ne le voulez pas, nous porterons témoignage contre vous, et nous dirons qu'il y avait un jeune homme avec vous. »

Santerre a suivi le texte de la Bible, et il nous montre Susanne parfaitement belle; il la fait voir allant entrer dans le bain, il nous montre son inquiétude en entendant du bruit, et sa pudeur qui l'engage à se cacher avec le peu de vêtemens qui restent à sa disposition. Les vieillards, avides de la regarder, semblent craindre de l'aborder, et paraissent délibérer sur ce qu'ils vont lui dire.

Santerre concevait lentement et travaillait de même; aussi trouve-t-on peu de tableaux de lui; celui-ci donne une idée favorable de son talent : si le dessin n'a pas toute la pureté de l'antique, on trouve dans la pose une grâce et une naïveté délicieuses; la couleur, sans être des plus brillantes, est suave, et le fini du travail ne nuit en rien à la vérité.

Porporati a fait d'après ce tableau une gravure qui est fort estimée, et qui fut son morceau de réception à l'Académie de Paris, comme le tableau avait été celui du peintre.
