קְבַּר אַבְרָהָם וְשָׂרָה אִשְׁתּוֹ : 11 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי מוֹת אַבְרָהָם וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת־יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ וַיֵּשֶׁב יִצְחָק

עם־בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי שביעי 14 וְאֵלֶּה תּלְדת יִשְׁמָעֵאל בֶּן־אַבְרָהָם אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה הָגָר

הַמִּצְרִית שִׁפְחַת שָׂרָה לְאַבְרָהָם : 13 וְאֶלֶה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׁמָעֵאל בִּשְׁמתָּם לְתוֹלְדֹתָם בְּכָר יִשְׁמָעֵאל נְבָית

וְקֵדָר וְאַרְבְּאֵל וּמִבְשָׁם : 14 וּמִשְׁמָע וְדוּמָה וּמַשָׂא : מפטיה 15 חֲרֵד וְתֵימָא יְטוּר נָפִישׁ וֶקְדְמָה: 16 אֵלֶה הֵם בְּנִי

יִשְׁמָעֵאל וְאֶלֶה שְׁמִתָם בְּחַצְרֵיהֶם וּבְטִירֹתָם שְׁנֵים־ עֶשְׂרִ נְשִׂיאָם לְאָמתָם : 17 וְאֵלֶּה שְׁנֵי חַי יִשְׁמָעֵאל מְאַת שָׁנָה וּשְׁלשִׁים שָׁנָה וְשֶׁבַע שָׁנִים וַיִּגְרָע וַיָּמָת וַיֵּאָסֶף אֶל־־עַמָּיו :

18 וַיִּשְׁכְּנוּ מַחֲוִילָה עַד־־שור אֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי מִצְרַיִם בְּאֲכָה אַשׁוּרָה עַל־פְּנֵי כָל־

16 וְאֶלֶה תּוֹלְדֹת יִצְחָק בֶּן־אַבְרָהָם אַבְרָתָם הוֹלִיד אֶת־יִצְחָק :

20 וַיְהִי יִצְחָק בֶּן־אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה בְּקַחְתּוֹ אֶת־רִבְקָה בַּת־בְּתוּאֵל הָאֲרַמִּי מִפַּדַּן אֲרֶם אֲחָוֹת לָבָן הָאֲרַמִּי לְוֹ לְאִשָּׁה : 21 וַיִּעְתַּר יִצְחָק לַיהוָה לְנְכַח אִשְׁתּוֹ כִּי עֲקָרָה הִוא וַיְעָתִר לוֹ יְהוָה וַתַּהַר רִבְקָה אִשְׁתּוֹ : 22 וַיִּתְרְצֵצִוּ הַבָּנִים בְּקִרְבָּהּ

וַתֹּאמֶר אִם־כֵּן לָמָּה זֶה אָנבִי וַתִּלֶךְ לִדְרשׁ אֶת־ גוים ק יְהוָה : 23 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה לָהּ שְׁנֵי גיים בְּבִטְנֵךְ וּשְׁנֵי

לְאָמִים מִמֵעַיִךְ יִפָּרֵדוּ וּלְאֹם מִלְאִם יֶאֱמָץ וְרַב עֲבָר צעיר ; 24 וַיִּמְלְאוּ יָמֶיהָ לָלֶדֶת וְהִנֵּה תּוֹמֵם בְּבִטְנָה 4 25 ויצא הָרִאשׁוֹן אַדְמוֹנִי כָּלֶוֹ כְּאַדְרֶת שֵׂעָר וַיִּקְרְאוּ שְׁמוֹ

עשו : 26 וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן יָצָא אָחִיו וְיָדְוֹ אֹחֶזֶת בעקב עשָׂו וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ יַעֲקֹב וְיִצְחָק בֶּן־שִׁשִׁים שָׁנָה בְּלֶדֶת

59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.

60 And they blessed Rebekah,

and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.

61 ¶ And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man : and the servant took Rebekah and went his way.

62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country.

63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the even-tide : * and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and behold the camels were coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.

65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a veil, and covered herself.

66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.

67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: And Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. §

CHAP. XXV.

1 The sons of Abraham by Keturah.

7 His age and death. 24 The birth of Esau and Jacob. 29 Esau selleth his birth-right.

THEN again Abraham took a

wife, and her name was Keturah. ‡

2 And she bare him Zimrah, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.

3 And Jokshan begat Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Ashurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.

4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

5 ¶ And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac:

6 But unto the sons of the concubines which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son || (while he yet lived) eastward unto the east-country.

7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.

8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.*

9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zoar the Hittite, which is before Mamre ;

10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth;

*To offer up his fervent prayers to the Supreme Being, in a place where he might be free from interruption; or, to breath the cool evening air, in pious meditation.

Sweetly expressive of the power of conjugal felicity, to soften the pangs of filial tenderness, and the regret for the loss of an excellent mother.

Here Scripture informs us, that Abraham took another wife, named Keturah, but it doth not appear at what period of Abraham's life this was: all we know is, that it was not before the birth of Isaac; for, how could Abraham say, in chap. xv. verse 3, "Behold to me thou hast given no seed, and lo, one born in my house is mine heir," if he then had children by Keturah? But the old Patriarch wishing to restore the comfort of domestic society in some sort, therefore marries Keturah, who in all probability, was a concubine, or secondary wife already in the family. The general opinion is, that Keturah was Hagar, and that it was for this reason that Isaac went to Lahai-rui, where she dwelt, in order to bring her back to his father. See Jarchi.

In order to shew them, that Isaac only was to be his sole heir, and the inheritor of God's blessings to him, as well as the entire possession of the promised land.

59 וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ אֶת־רִבְקָה אֲחֹתָם וְאֶת־מִקְתָּהּ וְאֶת־עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם וְאֶת־אֲנָשָׁיו : 60 וַיְבָרְכוּ אֶת־רִבְקָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ לָהּ אֲחֹתֵנוּ אַתְּ הֲיִי לְאַלְפִי רְבָבָה וְיִירָשׁ זַרְעךְ אֵת שַׁעַר שְׁנְאָיו : 61 וַתָּקָם רִבְקָה וְנַעֲרֹתֶיהָ וַתִּרְכַּבְנָה על־הַגְּמַלִים וַתֵּלַכְנָה אַחֲרֵי הָאִישׁ וַיָּקָה הָעֶבֶד אֶת־ רִבְקָה וַיֵּלֶךְ : 62 וְיִצְחָק בָּא מִבּוֹא בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי וְהוּא יוֹשֵׁב בְּאֶרֶץ הַנָּגֶב: 63 ויצא יִצְחָק לָשׂוּחַ בַּשָּׂדֶה לִפְנֵוֹת עֶרֶב וַיִּשָּׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה גְמַלִים בָּאִים : 64 וַתִּשָׂא רִבְקָה אֶת־עֵינֶיהָ וַתֵּרֶא אֶת־יִצְחָק וַתּפּל מֵעַל הַגָּמָל : 65 וַתֹּאמֶר אֶל־הָעבֶד מִי־הָאִישׁ הַכָּזֶה הַהלֵךְ בַּשָּׂדֶה לִקְרָאתנוּ וַיֹּאמֶר הֶעבֶד הוּא אֲדֹנִי וַתִּקְח הַצְעִיף וַתִּתְכַּס : 6 וַיְחַפֶּר הָעֶבֶד לִיִצְחָק אֵת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה : 67 וַיְבִאֶהָ יִצְחָק הָאֹהֶלָה שָׂרָה אִמוֹ וַיִּקְח אֶת־רִבְקָה וַתְּהִי־לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה וַאֲהָבֶהָ וַיִּנָּחֵם יִצְחָק אַחֲרֵי אִמּוֹ :

וַיֹּסֶף אַבְרָהָם וַיִּקח אֲשֶׁה וּשְׁמָהּ קְטוּרָה : 2 וַתֵּלֶד

אֶת־זִמְרָן וְאֶת־יָקְשָׁן וְאֶת־מְדָן וְאֶת־מִרְיָן וְאֶת־ יִשְׁבָּק וְאֶת־שְׁוּחַ : 3 וְיָקְשָׁן יָלַד אֶת־שְׁבָא וְאֶת־בְּדֶן וּבְנֵי דְדָן הָיוּ אַשׁוּרָם וּלְטוּשָׁם וּלְאִמִּים

: 4 וּבְנֵי מִדְיָן עֵיפָה וָעֵפֶר וַחֲנֹךְ וַאֲבִידֶע וְאֶלְדָּעה כָּל־אֵלֶה בְּנֵי קְטוּרָה : 5 וַיִּתֵּן אַבְרָהָם אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ לְיִצְחָק : 6 וְלִבְנֵי הַפִּילַגְשִׁים אֲשֶׁר לְאַבְרָהָם נָתַן אַבְרָהָם מַתָּנֹת וַיְשַׁלְחֵם מֵעַל יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ בְּעוֹדֶנּוּ חַי קֵדְמָה אֶל־אֶרֶץ קֶדֶם: 7 וְאֵלֶּה יְמֵי שְׁנֵי־חַיַּי אַבְרָהָם אֲשֶׁר־חָי מְאַת שָׁנָה וְשִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה וְחָמֵשׁ שָׁנִים: 8 וַיִּגְוַע וַיָּמָת אַבְרָהָם בְּשֵׂיבָה טוֹבָה זָקֵן וְשְׂבֵעַ וַיֵּאָסֶף אֶל־עַמָּיו : 9 וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אתוֹ יִצְחָק וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל בָּנָיו אֶל־מְעָרַת הַמַכְפִלָה אֶל־ שְׂדֵה עֶפְרן בֶּן־נֹחַר הַחִתִּי אֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי מַמְרֵא : 10 הַשָּׂדֶה אֲשֶׁר־קָנָה אַבְרָהָם מֵאֵת בְּנֵי־חֵת שָׁמָה

go:

43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee; a little water of thy pitcher to drink;

44 And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels; let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master's son.

45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.

46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.

47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the ear-ring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.

48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped * the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter unto his son.

49 And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master,

tell me and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.

50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.

51 Behold Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the LORD hath spoken.

52 And it came to pass, that when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD bowing himself to the earth.

53 And the servant brought forth jewels § of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah; he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.

54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night: and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.

55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.

56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way: || send me away, that I may go to my

master.

57 And they said, We will call the damsel and inquire at her mouth.

58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? ¶ And she said, I will go.

*The noble simplicity, and vein of true piety which runs through the whole of this discourse of Abraham's servant to his master's kindred, is easier to be admired than imitated: and fully justifies that metaphorical expression of R. Acha "That the common conversation of the servants of the Patriarchs, was more acceptable to God, than the law of their descendants:" i. e. the story of Eliezer being twice recorded in scripture; while many principal parts of the law are to be understood by inference only. See Jarchi.

This was always the method of betrothing the true or primary wife, whereas the concubine, of secondary wife, had no presents, but was only entitled to right of the marriage-bed. This custom of making costly presents, by way of betrothing, was also in use among the Grecians.

For if I make so long a delay, my master will be under great apprehension that my way

not been prosperous.

That is, wilt thou go with him immediately, or stay till we convey thee thither.
