Since Je-sus is my friend, And I to him belong, It mat-ters not what foes in-tend, However fierce and strong.

So shall thy Sovereign enter in,
And new and nobler life begin.

3 Deliverer, come! we open wide

Our hearts to thee; here, Lord, abide!
Let all thy glorious presence feel;
O King of souls, thyself reveal.

[blocks in formation]

1 O, SOMETIMES gleams upon our sight,
Through present wrong, the eternal Right;
And step by step, since time began,
We see the steady gain of man.

2 That all of good the past hath had,
Remains to make our own time glad,
Our common, daily life divine,
And every land a Palestine.

3 Through the harsh noises of our day,
A low sweet prelude finds its way;
Through clouds of doubt, and creeds of fear,
A light is breaking calm and clear.
4 Henceforth my heart shall sigh no more,
For olden time and holier shore :
God's love and blessing, then and there,
Are now and here and everywhere.

I AGAIN, as evening's shadow falls,
We gather in these hallowed walls;
And vesper hymn and vesper prayer
Rise mingling on the holy air.

2 May struggling hearts that seek release
Here find the rest of God's own peace;
And, strengthened here by hymn and prayer,
Lay down the burden and the care.

3 O God, our Light! to Thee we bow;
Within all shadows standest Thou;
Give deeper calm than night can bring;
Give sweeter songs than lips can sing.

4 Life's tumult we must meet again,
We cannot at the shrine remain;
But, in the spirit's secret cell,
May hymn and prayer forever dwell!

0, yet we trust that somehow good Will be the final goal of ill, To pangs of nature, sins of will, Defects of doubt and taints of blood;

Blest day of God, most calm, most bright, The first and best of days, The laborer's rest, the saint's delight, The day of prayer and praise!

44.

I BLEST day of God, most calm, most bright,
The first and best of days,

The laborer's rest, the saint's delight,
The day of prayer and praise!

2 My Saviour's face made thee to shine,
His rising thee did raise,

And made thee heavenly and divine
Beyond all other days.

3 The first-fruits oft a blessing prove To all the sheaves behind,

And they who do the Sabbath love,
A happy week will find.

4 This day I must to God appear,
For, Lord, the day is thine;
Help me to spend it in thy fear,
And thus to make it mine.
