Difobedience; and the Working of Satan is with all Power and Signs, and lying Wonders, and with all Deceivablenefs of Unrighteoufnefs, in them that perish.

The Devil was a Murderer from the Begin ning, and abode not in the Truth, because there is no Truth in him. When he fpeaketh a Lie, he fpeaketh of his own; for he is a Liar, and the Father of it.

The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a Man which fowed good Seed in his Field; but while Men flept, his Enemies came and fowed Tares among the Wheat. He that foweth the good Seed is the Son of Man; the Field is the World; the good Seed are the Children of the Kingdom; but the Tares are the Children of the Wicked One; and the Enemy that foweth them is the Devil.

In this the Children of God are manifeft, and the Children of the Devil; whofoever doth not Righteoufnefs, is not of God; neither he that loveth not his Brother.

He that committeth Sin is of the Devil: For the Devil finneth from the Beginning. And they that are of their Father the Devil, will do the Lufts of their Father.

Cain was of that wicked One, and flew his Brother, becaufe his own Works were evil, and his Brother's righteous.

i The God of this World hath blinded the Minds of them which believe not, left the Light of the glorious Gospel of Chrift should shine unto them.

[blocks in formation]

Some hear the Word of God, but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately and taketh away the Word out of their Hearts, left they fhould believe and be faved.

1 Sometimes when the unclean Spirit is gone out of a Man, he returneth again, and taketh with him seven other Spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last State of that Man is worse than the first.

Wherefore take unto you the whole Armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the Wiles of the Devil. For we wrestle not against Flesh and Blood; but against Principalities, against Powers, against the Rulers of the Darknefs of this World, against spiritual Wickedness in high Places.

Be fober, be vigilant; left by any means, as the Serpent beguiled Eve through his Subtilty, the Tempter hould tempt you also, and so your Minds thould be corrupted from the Simplicity

that is in Chrift.

For Satan himfelf is transformed into an Angel of Light; and therefore it is no great Thing if his Minifters alfo, viz. falfe Apostles and deceitful Workers, be transformed as the Minifters of Righteousness.

P Behold Satan hath defired to have us, that he may fift us as Wheat. Let us therefore watch and pray, that we enter not into Temptation; left Satan fhould get an Advantage of us and hinder us, in running the Race that is fet before us.

If we do not give Place to the Devil, but refift him, ftedfast in the Faith, he will flee from us. But it is difficult for them to recover themselves out of the Snare of the Devil, who are taken captive by him at his Will.

If any Man, that is called a Brother, be a Fornicator, or Covetous, or an Idolater, or a Railer, or a Drunkard, or an Extortioner, or fuch like wicked Perfon; it is fo judged and ordered by the Apostles, that in the Name of our Lord Jefus Chrift, when we are gathered together with the Power of our Lord Jefus Chrift, fuch a one be delivered unto Satan for the Destruction, of the Flesh; or that he may learn not to blafpheme; that the Spirit may be faved in the Day of the Lord Jefus.

CHAP. VI.

Concerning the DUTY of MAN to GOD.

a

AL

In GENERAL.

LL the Ends of the World shall remember and turn unto the Lord: All Dominions fhall ferve and obey him.

All Nations whom thou haft made, shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and fhall glorify thy Name.

As I live, faith the Lord, every Knee fhall bow to me, and every Tongue fhall confefs to God.

[ocr errors]

d None of us liveth to him felf, and no Man dieth to himfelf. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: Whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. And we are not our own; for we are bought with a Price. Let us therefore glorify God in our Body, and in our Spirit, which are God's.

Let us have Grace, whereby we may ferve God acceptably; ferving him with our Spirit in the Gofpel of his Son.

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

Let us also present our Bodies a living Sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is our reasonable Service.

For the Love of Christ constraineth us, who died for all; that they which live, should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

h Wherewith fhall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before him with Burnt-Offerings, with Calves of a Year old? Will the Lord be pleafed with Thousands of Rams, or ten Thoufands of Rivers of Oil? Shall I give my First-born for my Tranfgreffion, the Fruit of my Body for the Sin of my Soul? He hath fhewed thee, O Man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do juftly, and to love Mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

i The Grace of God that bringeth Salvation, hath appeared to all Men; teaching us, that deny ing Ungodlinefs and worldly Lufts, we fhould live foberly, righteously and godly in this prefent World.

The Lord hath defired Mercy, and not Sacrifice; and the Knowledge of God more than Burnt Offerings.
