"Strive not about Words to no Profit, but to the fubverting of the Hearers.

Let no corrupt Communication proceed out of your Mouth, but that which is good, to the Ufe of edifying, that it may minister Grace to the Hearers.

[ocr errors]

Strengthen ye the weak Hands, and confirm the feeble Knees. Speak a Word in Season to him that is weary; and let thy Words uphold him that is falling.

y If a Man be overtaken in a Fault, ye which are fpiritual restore such a one in the Spirit of Meeknefs, confidering thyself, left thou also be tempted.

Of fome, have Compaflion, making a Difference; and others fave with Fear, pulling them out of the Fire.

a Confefs your Faults one to another; and submit yourselves one to another, in the Fear of God, b He that winneth Souls is wife.

Brethren, if any of you do err from the Faith, and one convert him, let him know, that he which converteth the Sinner from the Error of his Way, thall fave a Soul from Death, and shall hide a Multitude of Sins.

d Have Compaffion on the Ignorant, By Inftruction. and on them that are out of the Way; for that ye yourselves alfo are compaffed with Infirmity.

• Inftruct thofe that oppose themselves; cause them to understand wherein they have erred; and make them know the Certainty of the Words of Truth: That they that err in Spirit may come to Understanding; and they that murmur, may learn Doctrine. For how forcible are right Words!

f Give not that which is holy unto the Dogs'; neither caft ye your Pearls before Swine: left they trample them under their, Feet, and turn again and rent you. Behold the Word of the Lord is to them a Reproach, they have no Delight in it. 8 Am I therefore become your Enemy, because I tell you the Truth?

h Give Inftruction to a wife Man, and he will be yet wifer; teach a juft Man, and he will increase in Learning.

i Wo unto you that have taken away the Key of Knowledge. Ye entered not in yourfelves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

Admonition.

* Exhort one another daily, while it is called To-day; left any of you be hardened through the Deceitfulness of Sin.

1 Be not negligent to put one another always in Remembrance of thefe Things which pertain unto Life and Godliness, though ye know them, and be established in the prefent Truth.

Ye also that are full of Goodness, and filled with all Knowledge, admonifh one another.

n If any Man obey not the Word of God, note that Man, and have no Company with him, that he may be ashamed; yet count him not as an Enemy, but admonifh him as a Brother.

Warn them that are unruly.

PWe must all appear before the Judgment-feat of Chrift, that every one may receive according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the Terror of the Lord, we perfuade Men.

4 Thou fhalt in any wife rebuke thy

Reproof. Neighbour, and not fuffer Sin upon him. * Reprove not a Scorner, left he hate thee. Rebuke a wife Man, and he will love thee.

He that refufeth Reproof erreth. He that hateth Reproof is brutish: But he that regardeth Reproof, fhall be honoured.

He that being often reproved, hardeneth his Neck, shall fuddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

He that rebuketh a Man, afterwards fhall find more Favour than he that flattereth with his Tongue.

W

Open Rebuke is better than fecret Love: For faithful are the Wounds of a Friend.

* As an Ornament of fine Gold, so is a wife Reprover upon an obedient Ear.

y Let the Righteous fmite me, it shall be a Kindnefs; and let him reprove me, it fhall be an excellent Oil, which shall not break my Head.

z A Scorner loveth not one that reproveth him; neither will he go unto the Wife.

a He that reproveth a Scorner, getteth to himfelf Shame.

b A Reproof entereth more into a wife Man, than a hundred Stripes into a Fool.

Give none Offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the Church of God.

Giving no

Offence.

d.Let no Man put a Stumbling-block, or an Occasion to fall, in his Brother's Way.

• Take heed left by any means your Liberty become a Stumbling-block to them that are weak. f Him that is weak in the Faith, receive ye; but not to doubtful Difputations.

It is good neither to eat Flefh, nor to drink Wine, nor any Thing whereby thy Brotheriftumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. For if any Man fee thee which haft Knowledge do fuch Things, fhall not the Confcience of him that is weak be emboldened to do the fame? And through thy Knowledge fhall thy weak Brother perish, for whom Chrift died?

If therefore thy Brother be grieved with thy Meat; now walkeft thou not charitably: Destroy not him with thy Meat, for whom Chrift died.

iWhen ye fin fo against the Brethren, and wound their weak Confcience, ye fin against Christ.

* Haft thou Faith? Have it to thyself before God. All Things indeed are pure; but it is Evil for that Man who eateth with Öffence,

1 Wo unto him that giveth his Neighbour Drink; that putteft thy Bottle to him, and makest him drunk.

m Whofo caufeth the Righteous to go aftray in an evil Way, he shall fall himself into his own Pit. Be thou an Example of the BeSetting a good lievers, in Word, in Conversation, Example. in Charity, in Faith, in Purity.

The DUTIES of HUSBANDS and WIVES.

• When Woman was taken out of

Flufbands. Man; and afterwards brought unto the Man to be an Help-meet for him; Adam faid, This is now Bone of my Bones, and Flesh of my Flesh. Therefore shall a Man leave his Father and his Mother, and shall cleave unto his Wife, and they fhall be one Flefh.

He which made them at the Beginning, made them Male and Female; and faid, For this Cause fhall a Man leave Father and Mother, and fhall cleave to his Wife; and they twain shall be one Flesh. Wherefore they are no more twain, but one Flesh: What therefore God hath joined together, let no Man put asunder.
