THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT PROTAIS.

It is customary to unite St Gervais with St. Protais, because their bodies were found together by St Ambrose, bishop of Milan, in the year 386; but, except this circumstance, every thing related concerning these martyred saints may be called in question.

It is not known therefore whether they were brothers, whether they bore arms and were victims of Nero's persecution, or whether they lived in the reign of Marcus Aurelius, and were put to death by command of Artasius, for having refused to sacrifice to false gods. Le Sueur has followed the latter account; but we are at a loss to find why he has separated St Protais from his illustrious companion.

The sublimity of the subject, the beauty of the characters, and the accuracy and just proportions of the draperies, all display most exalted talents. It is one of Le Sueur's finest pictures, and has had the advantage of being engraved by Gerard Audran.

On a l'habitude de réunir saint Gervais et saint Protais, parce que leurs corps furent trouvés ensemble par saint Ambroise, évêque de Milan, en l'an 386; mais, excepté ce fait, tout le reste de ce qui regarde ces saints martyrs peut être révoqué en doute.

On ne sait donc pas s'ils étaient frères, s'ils ont porté les armes, s'ils furent victimes des persécutions de Néron, ou s'ils vécurent sous le règne de Marc-Aurèle, et s'ils furent mis à mort par ordre d'Artase, pour avoir refusé de sacrifier aux faux dieux. C'est cette dernière version que Le Sueur a suivie ; mais nous ignorons pourquoi il a séparé saint Protais de son illustre compagnon.

La noblesse du sujet, la beauté des caractères, la sévérité et la justesse des draperies, tout annonce le plus grand talent. C'est un des plus beaux tableaux de Le Sueur, et il a eu l'avantage d'être gravé par Gérard Audran.
