Paul said, "to Tim. i. 15. If certainly his

to be the life of the world; and, as St. save sinners, of whom I am chief," 1st he did the work, he came to do, and power was adequate, he must accomplish this great work of salvation. For it is said that all, both in heaven and earth, was committed unto him. He, indeed, said that he had finished the work, that the Father gave him to do, John xvii. 4. Chapter xix. verse 30, "When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and bowed his head, and gave up the ghost :" "but he arose again, and ever liveth to make intercession."

:

The prophet Isaiah had a wonderful view of the Messiah. liii. 10, 11, "Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travel of his soul, and shall be satisfied by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities." John ii. 1, 2, "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." Heb. ii. 9, "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man." Verses 14, 15, "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood,he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who, through fear of death, were all their life time subject to bondage." I John iv. 14,"And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world" Psalm Ixiv. 9, "And all men shall fear, and shall declare

the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doings."

Now see St. John xii. 32, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me."

Then turn to Eph. iii. 8, 9, where Paul says that, "Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; and to make all men see, what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ." The apostle in this chapter speaks of the grace of God, as being à mystery of Christ; and so great that many believed, it extended to those only, who, under the former dispensation, were distinguished as the peculiar people of God; that the Gentiles, being outcasts, could not be favored with it. But the apostle, on his knees, prays the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that we might know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that we might be filled with all the fulness of God. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation, hath appeared to all men; not only to the Jews, but also to the Gentiles; for God, says, he has no respect of persons. Peter had a view of this, in the vision of the sheet, let down from heaven; wherein. he said, God shewed him, that he should call no man common or unclean. It may be said by some. here is a contradiction; for it has been stated before, that mankind are dead in trespasses and sins. It is presumed all will agree, that by the fall of Adam, all his posterity are under condemnation. Now the question is, how they can be considered free. I believe in no way, only in the second Adam. to wit, in consequence of what he has done, by making an atonement Paul is full to this point. Rom v. 18, "Therefore, as by the offence of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life."

Now I think it will not be pretended, that we were not under this condemnation, until we came to experience its effects; the effect is not the cause. So, on the other hand, if we be justified by the righteousness of Christ, we are thus considered by God, even before we experience it; so that our believing in, and receiving the atonement, to our abundant joy in God, is not the cause of our justification; but by the death of Christ, we were reconciled to God, when we were enemies, and Christ is represented as a Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world. In this sense, and in no other, as I understand the scriptures, it is that we can call no man common or unclean. "Wherefore, as by one man, sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned," Rom. v. 12 "For by the law is the knowledge of sin," iii. 20. “Moreover, the law entered that the offence might abound; but where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: that as sin hath reigned unto death even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord," Rom. v. 20. 21. The prophet Isaiah in the thirty-fifth chapter, speaking of the glory of Christ in his offices, says, "An highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the way of holiness." Christ, as a priest to make an atonement for sin, by his own blood, entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption. As a prophet, he will so teach transgressors: that the eyes of the blind will be opened to behold the beauties of holiness; the ears of the deaf will be unstopped, to hear the joyful news of peace and pardon ; and the tongues of the dumb shall be loosed, to speak forth praises to God and the Lamb. And in his kingly office, he will subject all things to himself; cause that every knee should bow of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God

the Father. "No man," says the apostle, "can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost." Cor. xii. 3. The prophet concludes the chapter last named by saying, "And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs, and everlasting joy upon their heads they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away." No one I suppose will contend, that Christ will not save all for whom he died, or all that God gave him And it appears to me that he died as much for one as another, according as I read the account of his death. And God said, "He would give him the heathen for his inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for his possession. Jesus said, that he came to seek and to save that which was lost. He came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. In this way, we can pray in faith, that God, in his own time and way, would bring all mankind to believe the truth in Christ; yea, bring them into the love of the truth. And to this glorious end, may the preaching of the Gospel be attended with the energy of the spirit of God, and may the professed ministers of the Gospel be and appear according to that which is written, "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!"

After reading the foregoing defence to the Council, they proceeded to ask me some questions; and, as they have stated in their result, that they thought me to have been exceedingly evasive," during my examination, I have thought proper to make a statement of some of the most important questions, together with my answers, which I have endeavored to do in the same language, as near as I can recollect, and 1 have conversed with a number of candid men, who attended the Council, that say my statement embraces the ideas in substance.

lieve that all will be made happy immediately after death or at what time? Ans. I believe it will be

when sin has an end; as it respects the time I know not when.

Here I will take the liberty to note a few words on the fourth question, in the above statement. It is the opinion of many, that all mankind, after the resurrection, will be assembled together; a formal judgment set, and Christ be the judge; that he will reward every man according to his works; and that his sentence on some will be endless life: but on far the greater part, endless misery: which opinion is chiefly founded on the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew. I shall only query whether it be according to scripture or reason, to suppose, there is so much difference in the conduct of the best man among the fallen race, and the worst, that justice will destine one to eternal happiness, and another to endless torment. I would also request the reader to examine that chapter carefully, with its connexions, the time and circumstances attending it, to see if he can get a reference from it to a particular day, after the resurrection, or whether it was confined to that generation. The comforter was sent to reprove the world of judgment, because the
