Thanks to the hearty co-operation of my brother officers the book has thus reached its present form. I trust it may be of service to the sailor, as a handy work of reference, especially to those who are not gifted with retentive memories; and that after passing through the necessary criticism, pruned down where diffuse, and enlarged where too brief, it may at some future time find favour with those who from motives of duty, or pleasure, take an interest in the art of navigation.

ΟΝ

N issuing this, the Second Edition of the SAILOR'S POCKET BOOK, it seems unnecessary to say more than has previously been said as to the object and scope of the publication.

The fact of another Edition being called for so soon is sufficient evidence that such a Work was wanted, and the kindly criticisms of my brother Officers and others, have shown me that the endeavour to call attention to the necessity of a thorough acquaintance with the important simplicities of the Naval profession, has been appreciated.

The book has not only been carefully revised and corrected, but considerable additions have been made to several of its sections; Wind and Current charts have been introduced, the Passage Tables enlarged, other Tables added, and additional Hydrographic information given. The Foreign sea terms and phrases have been kindly corrected by Admiral LOBO, of the Spanish Navy, and Captain Count CANEVARO, Naval Attaché to the Italian Legation.

My absence from England and the nature of my duties, have prevented me from doing as much of the revision as I should have wished but the care of the Second Edition has fallen into good hands, and I can never be sufficiently grateful to my old messmate, StaffCommander Thomas A. Hull, R. N., for the unselfish manner in which he has devoted so much of his scant leisure to insure its correctness.
