The first regular services ever held in Valparaiso, were commenced on the Feast of the Epiphany, 1861, in a hall rented and fitted up for the exclusive use of the Church. Fortnightly services have been regularly kept up, to the present time, on a week day evening. Once a month there has been a Sunday service. The Missionary has reason to thank the Great Head of the Church for the measure of success which He has been pleased to grant to his humble labors. A congregation of about 40 persons has been gathered, of whom 19 are communicants-6 being added by Confirmation.

If regular Sunday services could be established here, even twice a month, and a Clergyman could be found to reside in the town, there is no doubt but that a good congregation could be brought together; and, in a little while, a Church erected. The field is a most promising one.

TRINITY CHURCH, VANDERRURG COUNTY.

Rev. W. L. GITHENS, late Missionary and Rector.

Report from June 1st to November 7th, 1860.-Baptisms-Infants, 10; Total, 10. Marriages, 3. Funerals, 2. Performed service, 61 times; Preached, 54 times; Catechized, 10 times; Holy Communion administered, 5 times.

I left this Parish early in November, and removed to St. Luke's, Cannelton. I have made two visits here since. At the first, in December, I held services and preached twice; and, at the last visit, in March, I held services and preached six times; had five baptisms, and one marriage.

This is a most interesting Missionary Parish. There are many earnest, zealous, Church people. They have a fine little Parsonage nearly completed, and a pleasant School Room, for Parochial School.

During the Fall and early part of the Winter, I visited a Missionary station, about eight miles from town, and held service thereat one Sunday in each month. In January, I commenced officiating monthly in Trinity Church, Vanderburgh County, the Rectorship of which is vacant. During these visits, I have baptized one infant, presented three candidates for Confirmation, and administered the Communion three times. I have also visited the Parish at such times during the week as I deemed necessary, and am able to report a provision being made for the payment of the debt under which the Parish had grown discouraged.

In enabling me to perform these Missionary duties, I owe much to the kindness of Rev. Dr. Chapman, for his willingness to take my place in St. James' Church while I have been absent.

My report begins on the first of January, at which time I took charge of the Parish. It having been vacant for nearly a year, I found plenty to do. I think we have evidence of marked improvement, and hopes of a working Parish. We have lost several, however, of the congregation, by removals. Among these was a family which, from the first, took a deep interest in the foundation and support of the Parish. Although, at present, there is little to encourage an increase of business or population, it is evidently an important point, where the Church may hope yet to be permanently established, and do much good. We have a pleasant village, and a district rich in prospect. Though our numbers are few, we always have more or less in our congregations of earnest Christian worshippers of other communions. We have held Wednesday evening services, with lectures, since the beginning of Lent, and hope to continue throughout the year. I have only reported the communicants who actually come to our Church to worship and partake of the Holy Communion.

TO THE RT. REV. GEORGE UPFOLD, D. D., Bishop of Indiana :

RT. REV. SIR:

VINCENNES, June 5th, 1861.

The past year has not been without its opportunities and occasions for the use of my ministry. I have supplied the place of the Rector of St. James' Parish, in his monthly absences on Missionary duty.

I have also officiated once in each of the vacant Parishes at Mt. Vernon and New Harmony. I have performed, besides, the following ministerial acts:

Baptisms-Infants, 4. Marriages, 3; Funerals, 4.

Very Respectfully Yours,

R. M. CHAPMAN.

RT. REV. GEORGE UPFOLD, D. D., Bishop of Indiana :

I became the Minister of St. John's Church, Crawfordsville, April 1st, 1861; and, up to the present time, I have ministered statedly in that Parish. I have visited Greencastle-another part of the Missionary field assigned me by the Committee of Domestic Missions-but once, and then, not finding suitable arrangements for the purpose, I performed no Missionary work.

From the condition of St. John's Parish, and my short acquaintance with it, I am able to make no definite statistical report.

N. P. CHARLOT, Rector.
