REPORT:

The Standing Committee respectfully report their action for the past Conventional year, as follows, viz:

1861, JUNE 7th, The Standing Committee elect, met in Indianapolis, upon the call of the Secretary of the Convention, and organized by the election of Rev. Horace Stringfellow, Jr., as President, and J. B. McChesney, Secretary.

"The President presented and read the following letter from the Bishop of the Diocese:

"To the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Indiana:

" "As my "council of advice," I request your advice in relation to the following case: On the 23d February, 1858, I pronounced sentence of suspension from all the functions of the sacred ministry on the Rev. William Porter Ray, a Presbyter of this Diocese, for the period of one year and six months, and until he should present a certificate from three respectable Clergymen of this Church, that during the

fixed period of his suspension he had lived a 'sober, righteous, and godly life.' The fixed period of his suspension has long since terminated, but no such certificate, as the sentence contemplated, has been presented, nor is there any probability that it ever will. I have continued his name on the list of the Clergy of the Diocese, with the word 'suspended' annexed. It seems to me rather awkward so to continue it year after year. Have I authority, and could I be warranted under the circumstances to drop the name of the Rev. William Porter Ray from the list of the Clergy of the Diocese? The suspended Presbyter has continued to live an irregular and ungodly life ever since his suspension, as I am informed, and has altogether discontinued attendance on the public worship of the Church and the participation of the sacrament of the Lord's Supper This latter offence is one which, of itself, subjects him to trial, and if convicted thereof, to punishment. Would it be advisable to summon him for trial again? He would probably refuse to attend, and would suffer judgment and sentence to go by default. But he might ap pear, and then the expense and trouble of another trial would beincreased. Would it be worth while to run this risk? Would it be advisable to pay no further attention to so utterly worthless a man, but erase his name from the list of the Clergy and let him go? On both these points your advice is respectfully solicited.

1861, Nov, 11th, The Committee met, when the testimonials of the Rev. William Bacon Stevens, D. D., Assistant Bishop elect of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, were laid before the Committee, and having been found correct, were, on motion, signed by the members thereof.

་ The Committee also signed testimonials of Martin V. Averill, recommending him to the Bishop as a candidate for Holy Orders.

The Committee to hom was referred so much of the Bishop's Address re lating to his continued indisposition, would beg leave to present the following resolutions:

Resolved, That this Convention has heard with great regret of the increased illness of the Bishop.of the Diocese, and would beg leave to tender him our heartfelt sympathy in his affliction.

Resolved, That he be requested to relieve himself from all Episcopal duties and cares for such time as he may find necessary, with the hope that, by the blessing of God, he may be restored to his former health.

Resolved, That a copy of these Resolutions be spread upon the Journal, and also furnished the Bishop by the Secretary of the Convention.

Resolved, That the Treasurer of the Diocese be requested to transmit to the Treasurer of the General Convention, by the Bishop or some one of the Delegates, the quota due from this Diocese.

Ordered, That the Secretary of the Convention be instructed to prepare the Report on "The state of the Church in this Diocese" for the General Convention.
