the contributions from the several Parishes to the Diocesan Missionary Fund have been very limited, and that several Parishes have not contributed anything. There is no reasonable excuse for such delinquency, and I trust it will be otherwise during the current year. I look to the Clergy to see that this very important matter is attended to, and that they give their several congregations the opportunity to contribute to this object and enforce the notice of the collection by a proper appeal to their liberality. The resolution of the Convention prescribing their duty, is imperative. They have only to discharge that duty, and their several congregations, I am satisfied, would cheerfully and liberally respond to the appeal.

In regard to the vacant Parishes in the Diocese, I desire to say that I am disposed to extend all reasonable aid to the Vestries of the same in securing a supply. But it is not reasonable to expect of me to do all the work. It is my province to superintend the Clergy, not to furnish them and help support them. The Vestries are bound to seek a supply, in which search I am willing and ready to aid them with my advice and counsel when asked. I do not and cannot hold myself in any way responsible for the supply of vacant Parishes.

In this connection let me say, that when a Clergyman is invited to the charge of a Parish, the invitation should be indefinite as to time, but definite as to salary. No Clergyman with any regard to self-respect, can accept an engagement for one year; much less an engagement to officiate on trial. That is asking far too much of a Clergyman; and it is, moreover, manifestly unjust and all on one side. He must break up all his social and business relations to meet such a call at the risk of rejection. The Vestries do

not incur any inconvenience of the kind; their social and business relations are not at all interfered with in the event of a failure to make a permanent engagement. There must be some risk, and the Parishes are the best able to incur it, and if the risk is proved to be injurious, they have a canonical remedy.

It is to me a matter of deep regret that I have been prevented from putting forth my efforts more extensively dur-. ing the past year. But it has been caused by a Providential visitation, to which I am bound to submit with resignation and patience. It has given me many bitter hours of discouragement. I trust that God will bless the means which I propose to employ for the relief of the physical disability which has so materially interfered with my work in the Diocese, and I affectionately entreat your prayers for the consummation of such hope.

The services are always well attended and the Sunday School is too large for the little Church, In looking back over the year that is past, I feel much encouraged. I know that our Church is exerting a great influence for good here. One thing always cheers me-that so many of our soldier boys in writing home to their friends, inquire particularly about the Church and Sunday School.

I have just learned that there are a number of persons in Rockport anxious for the occasional services of the Church. I hope to visit them soon after my return from Convention and see what can be done.
