the means of grace which through thy favour we enjoy: let us never use them in vain, but may they ever conduce to the instruction of our minds, the reforming of our lives, and the saving of our souls; making us such as thou requirest us to be in all holy conversation and godliness.

O heavenly Father, let thy blessing be upon all our pious designs and undertakings this day. Bless the ministers of thy word and sacraments, hear the prayers which shall be offered up in thy house, and let thy word be for the conviction and comfort of many souls; and may it take so deep root in our hearts, that the fruits of it may appear in our lives, to the glory of thy holy name. And grant, O gracious God, that our services this day may be such as shall tend to our comfort in the great day of thine appearing and glory. May we so hallow these sabbaths upon earth, that hereafter we may be admitted to the joyful celebration of the eternal sabbath in heaven; there, with all the Church triumphant, to laud and magnify thy glorious name, and to enjoy thy love, and sing thy praise for ever.

And now, O Lord, for the addition of this thy holy day, we bless thee; for the benefit of thy word, and for the ordinances of thy worship, we glorify thy name: yea, for all the means of grace, and for the hopes of glory, to thee, the God of all

grace, be praise, and honour, and glory, rendered, by us and by all thy people, from this time forth for

evermore.

SECOND SUNDAY EVENING.

Let us Pray.

O LORD our God, who art good to the souls that seek thee, and, according to thine infinite mercies, givest us eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, we humbly entreat thee mercifully to forgive us all our sins, and to receive us graciously in Him in whom thou art well pleased.

Oh! make us truly penitent and humbled for all which this day we have done amiss; and make us unfeignedly thankful for all the good we have received, and for all which thou hast, in any measure, enabled us to do aright. The evil is from ourselves alone, and to us belong shame and confusion of face for it; but all the good is of thy free grace and

mercy and to thy blessed name, O Lord our God, be all the praise and glory.

Let thy blessing, we pray thee, be upon thy word which we have this day heard, and upon all the means of grace that have been used for the good of our souls. Let the powerful influences of thy Holy Spirit apply thy word to our hearts, that we may walk more humbly and closely with thee, more conscientiously and circumspectly in all our ways; and be so obedient to its holy precepts, that finally we may enjoy the great and precious promises which it contains.

Supply, O Lord, by the teachings of thy Spirit, the want of thy public ordinances to all such as through any unavoidable impediments are kept from them and continue to us, gracious Lord, the light of thy Gospel, and all the opportunities which we enjoy for our souls' welfare.

And now, O Lord, our heavenly Father, we give thee humble thanks for the mercies of this day, and for thy great mercy and goodness that has followed us all the days of our life; for thy patience and longsuffering, for the preservation of our lives, and for every temporal comfort. But, above all, we praise thee for the mercies and blessings relating to the world to come, for Jesus Christ and redemption through Him, for the teaching and consolations of

thy Holy Spirit, for all the means of grace afforded us, and for the hope of glory which thou hast given to us. Make us, we beseech thee, ever sensible of thy mercies as we ought to be; and give us hearts filled with thy love and praise, and devoted to thy

service.

We cannot praise thee according to the riches of thy grace, and the multitude of thy mercies: but we desire to bless and praise thee with all the abilities wherewith thou hast blessed us. And help us, O Lord our God, to glorify thy name, not only in speaking to thy praise, but in so entirely devoting ourselves to thy service, that we may be thine in faithfulness, and in the sincerity of our hearts, all the days of our life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

OCCASIONAL COLLECTS,

TO BE USED WITH THE FOREGOING.

FOR CHRISTMAS DAY.

ALMIGHTY GOD and heavenly Father, we, thy unworthy servants, humbly adore thy mercy, faithfulness, and truth: and we give thanks unto thee, because thou didst give thine only begotten Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and, as at this time, to be born for us men and for our salvation. Grant, we beseech thee, that we, being regenerate and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit. Give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light. Give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity. And as thy blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil, and make us the sons of God, and heirs of eternal life, grant us, we humbly beseech thee, that, having this hope, we
