may, now in the time of this mortal life in which he came to visit us in great humility, purify ourselves even as he is pure: that when he shall appear again in his glorious majesty, to judge the quick and dead, we may rise to the life immortal through him, and be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom: where, with thee O Father, and thee O Holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

FOR ASH WEDNESDAY.

O LORD, who for our sakes didst fast forty days and forty nights, give us grace to use such abstinence, that, our flesh being subdued to the Spirit, we may ever obey thy godly motions in righteousness and true holiness, to thy honour and glory. And, O almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent, create and make in us new and contrite hearts; that we, worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR GOOD FRIDAY.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who, of thy tender love to mankind, hast sent thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon Him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross for us miserable sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death, that he might make us thy children, and exalt us to everlasting life; make us humble and contrite in heart at the remembrance of our sin. Give us true repentance and grant, we humbly beseech thee, that by His merits and death, and through faith in His blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of His passion. Make us alway to remember, with humble thankfulness, the exceeding great love of our Master and only Saviour Jesus Christ thus dying for us, and the innumerable benefits which, by His precious blood-shedding, he hath obtained to us. And grant, that as we are baptized into his death, so by continual mortifying our corrupt affections we may be buried with Him; and that, through the grave and gate of death we may pass to our joyful resurrection, for His merits who died, and was buried, and rose again for us, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR EASTER DAY.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who, through thine only-begotten Son Jesus Christ, hast overcome death, and opened unto us the gate of everlasting life, we laud and magnify thy glorious name for His triumphant resurrection from the dead. This is indeed the day which the Lord hath made; may we rejoice and be glad in it. For he is the very Paschal Lamb which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by His death hath destroyed death, and by His rising to life again hath restored to us everlasting life. Grant, O Lord, we humbly beseech thee, that we, being dead unto sin, and having alway in remembrance His resurrection from the dead, may rise with Him unto righteousness, setting our affections on things above: and that as by thy special grace preventing us thou dost put into our minds good desires, so by thy continual help we may bring the same to good effect, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth, with thee, and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

FOR ASCENSION DAY.

O GOD, the King of Glory, who hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph into thy kingdom in heaven, grant that we also may in heart and mind thither ascend, and with Him continually dwell. And, we beseech thee, leave us not comfortless; but send thy Holy Ghost to comfort us, and exalt us to the same place whither our Saviour Christ is gone before; who liveth and reigneth with thee, and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

FOR WHITSUNDAY.

O LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, who, as at this time, according to the most true promise of Jesus Christ our Lord, didst send the Holy Ghost from heaven in most wonderful manner, enduing thy holy Apostles with miraculous gifts, enabling them effectually to preach the Gospel to all nations, whereby we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and knowledge of thee and of thy Son Jesus Christ; we adore and magnify thy glorious name; we praise thee; we give thanks to thee for thy great glory. And as thou didst teach the hearts

of thy faithful people by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit, grant us, we humbly beseech thee, by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort. Strengthen us, we beseech thee, O Lord, with the Holy Ghost the Comforter, and daily increase in us thy manifold gifts of grace; the spirit of wisdom and understanding; the spirit of counsel and ghostly strength; the spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and fill us, O Lord, with the spirit of thy holy fear; and defend us with thy heavenly grace, that we may continue thine for ever; and daily increase in us thy Holy Spirit more and more, until we come to thine everlasting kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
