LOUIS CARDI, CALLED CIGOLI.

Louis Cardi, was born in 1559, at the chateau of Cigoli, in the Grand Dutchy of Florence, and according to a custom frequent at that time, he dropt his family name, to take that of the place where he was born; he was thus commonly known by the name of Cigoli. He was the pupil of Alexander Allori, and principally studied the productions of Andrea Vanucci, and those of Correggio. Pope Clement VII, sent for him to Rome and ordered him to paint the cure of the Paralytic, for the church of Saint Peter, which is considered as a master-piece.

Louis Cardi, also evinced his talent for architecture, in several public fètes and theatrical representations, given at Florence, on the marriage of Marie de Medicis with Henry IV. He published a treatise on colours, in which he points out the means to render them durable; he also wrote a treatise on perspective, the plates of which were engraved by his brother Sebastian Cardi.

Louis Cardi died at Rome, in 1613, at the

age of 54.

LOUIS CARDI, DIT CIGOLI.

Louis Cardi naquit en 1559, au château de Cigoli, dans le grand-duché de Florence, et, suivant un usage très fréquent à cette époque, il ne fit point usage de son nom de famille, et naissance. Aussi est-il habituellement prit celui de sa

désigné sous le nom de Cigoli.

Élève d'Alexandre Allori, il étudia principalement les ouvrages d'André Vanucci et ceux du Corrège. Le pape Clément VII l'appela à Rome et le chargea de peindre, pour l'église de Saint-Pierre, un tableau représentant la Guérison du Paralytique. Cet ouvrage est considéré comme sou chef

d'œuvre.

Louis Cardi a aussi fait connaître ses talens pour l'archi tecture, dans plusieurs fêtes publiques et représentations théâtrales, données à Florence, lors du mariage de Marie de Médicis avec Henri IV. Il a publié un Traité des Couleurs, dans lequel il donne les moyens de les rendre durables; il a fait aussi un Traité de Perspective, dont les planches ont été gravées par son frère, Sébastien Cardi.

Louis Cardi est mort à Rome, en 1613, âgé de 54 ans.
