Prayer, it is almost needless to say more: all who are Churchmen in any thing but the name, will be ready to acknowledge that there is a concentration of pious desire and of chastised fervour in these formularies, closely allied to genuine inspiration. They are like "wine on the lees well refined," and however excellent and pious are a variety of modern compositions, "No man having drank old wine straightway desireth new; for he saith, the old is better." It is in this persuasion, strengthened by daily use of the original compilation for many years, that the same materials, somewhat differing in arrangement, are now offered to the European inhabitants of this Island, under the immediate sanction of the Venerable the Archdeacon.

The real want existing for books of this kind is at present inefficiently supplied, and if this publication serves in any measure to answer that want, and to promote the decent solemnities of Family Worship, the best wishes of those concerned in it, will be fully answered.

In compliance with the request of his own family, the editor has been induced to add a few Occasional Prayers. In some of them the language of our Offices will easily be recognized, the others are chiefly adapted from Bishop Jeremy Taylor.

FAMILY

AND

PRIVATE PRAYERS.

THE Master having called his household together, may begin Family Worship by reading such a portion of Holy Scripture, as shall be convenient.

The Psalms, being ascriptions of Praise, should be repeated standing; and it will be better if they are recited by the Master and his family in alternate verses, as in the Public Service of our Church. The Gloria Patri, at the end of each Psalm, should by all means be so repeated; and the Lord's Prayer, as well as the Amen at the conclusion of each Collect, ought to be repeated audibly by all present.

SUNDAY MORNING.

This is the day which the Lord hath made : we will rejoice and be glad in it.

PSALM 84.

How amiable are thy dwellings thou Lord of hosts!

2 My soul hath a desire and longing to

B

enter into the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

3 Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young: even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house they will be alway praising thee.

5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee: in whose heart are thy ways.

6 Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well: and the pools are filled with water.

7 They will go from strength to strength: and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion.

8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer: hearken, O God of Jacob.

9 Behold, O God our defender: and look upon the face of thine Anointed.

10 For one day in thy courts: is better than a thousand.

11 I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God: than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness.

12 For the Lord God is a light and de

fence; the Lord will give grace and worship, and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly life.

13 O Lord God of hosts: blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.

Let us pray.

Amen.

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, hea

ALMIGHTY

venly Father, we give thee humble thanks, that thou vouchsafest to call us to the knowledge of thy grace, and faith in thy Gospel ; to receive us for thine own children by adoption, and to make us heirs through hope of thy everlasting kingdom. But chiefly are we bound on this day to praise thee for the glorious Resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who by his death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again, hath restored to us everlasting life. And as we do most heartily and devoutly adore thy name, for this thine infinite goodness already

vouchsafed to us, so do we most humbly beseech thee to continue thy grace and favour towards us, by disposing us to make a right use and improvement of all thy mercies; that we may not only worthily esteem them in our hearts, but show forth a due sense of them in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ETERNAL God, mighty in power, and of majesty incomprehensible, whom the Heaven of Heavens cannot contain, much less the walls of temples made with hands; but who yet hast been graciously pleased to promise thy especial presence wherever two or three of thy faithful servants shall assemble in thy name; regard, O Lord, our supplications this day in thy Holy Church, and accept our imperfect services. Let thy Spirit be with us in the performance of all our duties; in confession of sin, to affect our hearts with godly sorrow; in prayer, to quicken our devotion; in praises, to heighten our gratitude and love. Grant that our minds may be entirely raised from the thoughts of this world to the consideration
