ÉCOLE ITALIENNE. oooooooo RAPHAEL. oooooo PALAIS DE L'ESCURIAL.

«

THE VISITATION.

Painters, in their compositions, do not always confine themselves to be exactly guided by historical documens; and hence Raphael, in order to represent the subject in a more pleasing manner has deviated from the narrative of the gospel by saint Luke : « And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost; and she spake out with a loud voice, and said : Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? >

It is impossible to discover here the historical fidelity mentioned by M. Quatremère, in his history of the life and works of Raphael, and one cannot see why this scene is represented upon the banks of Jordan. It is not less astonishing that Raphael should have followed the example of the painters his predecessors, in presenting in the back ground another scene which took place thirty years after the Visitation, namely, the baptism of Jesus-Christ by saint John.

This picture was painted by Raphael when his vigour was at its height. It presents a great mass of beauty, and particularly a vigorous colouring which does not distinguish his early pictures. It was placed, before the year 1681, in the sacristy of the Escurial; it was upon wood, and was put upon canvas at Paris, in 1824. An engraving was taken from it by M. Desnoyers in 1824.

Height, 6 feet 9 inches; breadth, 4 feet 10 inches.
