PREFACE.

As prosecutions have been stayed for the publications of the publisher, throughout the last sixteen months, there is so much of a probability, that they will not be revived : and, with this prospect, we have yentured to close a volume of these

very

Interesting trials-trials that will be read with an increasing satisfaction, as the consequences are felt, which will certainly arise from them, in a freedom of discussion on all subjects.

There were many other persons arrested, and even tried, such as George Bere, Michael John Conner and John Christopher The first had his case stated by counsel, which led to nothing worthy of print, and the other two pleaded guilty. Each had six months imprisonment.

Others were held to bail and never brought to trial, such as John Jones, William Rance, Charles Sanderson and James Moffatt.

All these persons were arrested in the Publisher's employ, and these only. , Others have been arrested for selling the same or similar publications, within the last seven years, making a total of near forty persons, who have had more or less of imprisonment for asserting the right of free discussion on all subjects.

The trials, or mock trials of Richard Carlile will form a separate volume.

All the publications that have been prosecuted have been and are continued in open sale, and it is consequently to be hoped, that free discussion will takes its birth in this country with the expiration of the imprisonment of Thomas Riley Perry.
