FOR THE USE OF CHILDREN.
CONTAINING STORIES FROM THE OLD
Rev. SAMUEL WOOD, B. A.
PUBLISHED BY SIMPKIN AND MARSHALL.
The Author of the following pages is well aware that other works of the same kind are already before the public: to some of these, however, serious objections have been made, and it appeared to him that there was still ample room for another attempt to set forth the leading characters and events of the Bible, in a form which might at once attract the attention of children, and impress on their opening minds those lessons of
virtue, with which the sacred volume is replete.
He has written this work under a strong conviction, that, for children, Bible Stories are much more suitable than an Abstract of the Bible. The young must first be made acquainted with that which is most striking and most important ; they must have single transactions and individual characters presented to them ; and at a more advanced age they will be able to comprehend the connexion and the relative importance of the whole series of events. As an Abstract of the Bible none can be more excellent than that which has been

very young persons there seemed to be wanting something of a simpler character. The present work is intended to supply the deficiency; yet the Author trusts that the brief narratives, which are here offered to the notice of children, will incite them to read fuller and more connected accounts of the same transactions, and, above all, to apply frequently to that sacred fount, from which the materials of this volume are derived.
In one or two instances the Author has ventured to propose a different rendering from that which is given in our Common Version : and
