On croit que c'est en 316, sous le règne de Constantin-leGrand, que saint Martin naquit à Sabarie, ville située aux frontières de l'Autriche et de ia Hongrie. Fils d'un tribun militaire, il fut forcé de prendre le parti des armes, et servit dans les troupes païennes, malgré l'ardent désir qu'il avait de se ranger sous la foi catholique, et la vocation qu'il ressentait pour la vie monastique. Enrôlé dans la cavalerie dès l'âge de quinze ans, il se distingua par sa douceur et sa bonté; il était humble et patient à un point extraordinaire; il se faisait surtout remarquer par son extrême charité. Un jour, rencontrant à la porte d'Amiens un pauvre qui était tout nu, et n'ayant rien à lui donner, il ne balança pas à couper son manteau en deux, afin que ce malheureux pût au moins se garantir du froid. Après cinq années de service, il se retira près de Poitiers, où il fonda le monastère de Ligugey; depuis il fut appelé au siége épiscopal de Tours, et fonda près de cette ville le monastère de Marmoutiers. Sa vie, très active et remplie de miracles, se termina à l'âge de 81 ans, en 397, dans la même année que saint Ambroise. Ce tableau fut apporté d'Espagne vers 1750, et vendu au prince de Galles, père du roi George III. Il a été gravé par Th. Chambers, en 1766. ST. MARTIN. It is generally supposed that St. Martin was born in 316, under the reign of Constantine the great, at Sabaria, a town situated on the borders of Austria and Hungary. The son of a military tribune, he was obliged to adopt the profession o, arms, and served in the pagan army, notwithsdanding his ardent desire to attach himself to the catholic faith, and the vocation he felt for a monastic life. Enrolled in the roman cavalry at the age of fifteen, he became remarked for his suavity and goodness; humble and paf tient to an extraordinary degree, he was most especially distinguished for his extreme charity. One day, meeting a naked beggar at the gate of Amiens, and having no alms to bestow he cut his cloak in two pieces, and threw the half over the poor man's shoulders, that he might at least be sheltered from cold. After five years' service, he retired to the vicinity of Poitiers, where he founded the monastery of Ligugey; he was subsequently elevated to the episcopal see of Tours, and founded near that city the monastery of Marmoutiers. His active life illustrated by many miracles, terminated at the age of 81, in 397, the same year St. Ambrose died. This picture was brought from Spain about 1750, and sold to Frederic, prince of Wales, father of George III. It has been engraved by Th. Chambers, in 1766. |
