Lift up your heads, O ye gates,
And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors;
And the King of glory shall come in.*
Who is this King of glory?

The LORD strong and mighty,
The LORD mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates;
Even lift them up, ye everlasting doors;
And the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?

The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.-Psa. xxiv.

*This appears to refer to the bringing in of the ark by David or Solomon; and illustrates the ascension of Christ to heaven, and his coming again in glory.

XXV. Christ's coming and kingdom. And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse,*

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,

The spirit of wisdom and understanding,

*Jesse was the father of David, from whom Christ descended, as to his human nature.

The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

And shall make him of quick under

standing in the fear of the LORD: And he shall not judge after the sight

of his eyes,

Neither reprove after the hearing of

his ears:

But with righteousness shall he judge

the poor,

And reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:

And he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth,

And with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins,

And faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, And the leopard shall lie down with the kid;

And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;

And a little child shall lead them.

And the cow and the bear shall feed [together*];

Their young ones shall lie down together:

And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp,

And the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice'+ den.

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain :

For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD,

As the waters cover the sea.-Isa. xi. 1-9.

*This word is in the Septuagint and Syriac, and is implied in the Hebrew. + Ör, adder's, Margin.

XXVI. Wisdom and its benefits. Get wisdom, get understanding: Forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee:

True godliness.

Love her, and she shall keep thee, Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom:

And with all thy getting get understanding.*

Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: She shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace:

A crown of glory shall she deliver to

thee.

XXVII. The path of the wicked and of the just contrasted.

Enter not into the path of the wicked, And go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it,

Turn from it, and pass away.* *

For they sleep not, except they have done mischief;

And their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

For they eat the bread of wickedness,
And drink the wine of violence.
But the path of the just is as the
shining light,+

That shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

The way of the wicked is as darkness: They know not at what they stumble. -Prov. iv. 14—19.
