praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.Ephes. vi. 10-18.

XLIX. Believers freed from condemnation. Their character.

There is therefore* now no condemnation to them which are in+ Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law‡ could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, § condemned sin in the flesh that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.-Rom. viii. 1—5.

L. Christian dispositions and duties.

Let love be without dissimulation.* Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.t

Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.Rom. xii. 9-15.

* Without concealment. A duty peculiarly needed in a country without inns, and when Christians were often driven from their homes by persecution.

LI. Union, humility, honesty, and meekness.

Be

Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all

men.

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance* is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.Rom. xii. 16-21.

Render therefore to all their dues : tribute to whom tribute is due ; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

For

Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loveth anoother hath fulfilled the law. this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.-Rom. xiii. 7-10.

"Whatever other commandment there is, it is all summed up in this saying."-Scholefield.

LIII. Mortal and immortal life.- The Christian's triumph and duty.

This corruptible* must put on incorruption, and this mortal* must put on immortality.

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? Ógrave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.-1 Cor. xv. 53–58.
