A l'époque où vivait Raphaël, il était d'un usage général, surtout en Italie, d'avoir chez soi un tableau de la Vierge : aussi ce sujet a-t-il été traité par presque tous les peintres de ́cette époque ; et Raphaël, qui avait une dévotion particulière à la mère de Dieu, en a exécuté un si grand nombre, que, comme l'a dit M. Quatremère de Quincy,» le seul recueil de toutes les Vierges peintes ou simplement dessinées par Raphaël, et la description des variétés qu'il porta dans ces compositions, formerait une histoire abrégée de son talent et de son génie. On y verrait, comme dans tous ses autres ouvrages, une progression marquée, et on ferait en même temps un cours de toutes les nuances de caractère qu'il sut distinguer ou réunir, selon le genre que pouvait lui offrir un sujet où se rassemblent les idées d'innocence, de pureté virginale, de grâce, de noblesse, de sainteté, de divinité; qualités dont il a épuisé toutes les expressions. In Raphael's time it was the general custom, especially in Italy, to have in every family a picture of the Virgin; this subject was therefore selected by almost all painters of that age; and Raphael, who had a peculiar veneration for the mother of God, has executed so great a number of these compositions that, according to M. Quatremere de Quincy: « The very collection of all the Madonas painted or simply sketched by Raphael, and the description of the various characters he represented them under, would form an abridged history of his talents and genius. We should trace in them, as well as in all his other works, a marked progression, and a complete study might be made of all the varieties and shades of character which Raphael knew how to distinguish or harmonise together according to the nature of the subject, whether embracing the ideas of innocence, nobleness, virginal purity, or holiness and divinity; qualities all the expressions of which he has exhausted. » This picture has been engraved at Rome by C.
