Street and Glafsford Street, Glasgow, occupied as a warehouse by Meff. R. Aitken and Co. It began in the upper apartments, and fuch was the fury of the flames, that, before a fufficient fupply of water could be obtained, the roof was fallen in, and the greater part of the premiffes deftroyed. Fortunately, the night was calm, or the adjoin ing buildings would most likely have shared the fame fate. No lives were loft, but feveral people were confiderably hurt, by their exertions to fave the property, both in the warehouse and houses in the neighbourhood. A great deal of goods have been deftroyed, as well as others materially damaged. We understand great part of the property was infured.

On the 9th June, owing, as is fuppofed, to some muir-burn, the hill of 'Craigindinmy, forest of Glentanner, was fet on Gre; and, fuch was the rapidity of the flames, increafed by the extraordinary drynefs of the wood, that, notwithstanding the utmost exertions of the people from the furrounding Country, for a great length of time, the progrefs of the devouring element could not be arrested, until between 200 and 300 acres of the growing timber were totally confumed.

On the 9th June, between feven and eight o'clock in the evening, a fire broke out in the stove and drying-room of Melf. Atherton, Towndrow, and Co.'s fugar refining houfe, Strand Street, Liverpool, which raged with increafing violence till eleven o'clock, when the flames caught an adjoining warehoufe, filled with fugar and other goods. About three o'clock the following morning, the scene became truly terrific, threatening destruction to the whole range of buildings on the north-west corner of the Old Dock and in Strand Street; but, foon after that hour, the roof of the warehouse falling in deadened the flames, and they gradually fubfided, without further mifchief. the fugarhouse and the warehouse were confumed: but, we are happy to hear, that the perfons concerned are principally infured.

On Sunday, 10th June, three young boys went to the Black Rocks, to the east of Leith Harbour, and, ftopping too long, were furrounded by the making-tide. One of them got put with difficulty, but the other two were unfortunately drowned. A boat was difpatched from Leith, the moment the accident was known, but was too Jate to afford any relief. One of the bodies has fince been found.

A very melancholy accident happened lately, at a place called the Peafe, Berwick

fhire. As one of the baggage carts of the Forfarfhire militia was flopping there, a fine boy, about eight years of age, belonging to Serjeant Major Nicol, got out of the cart, and was climbing on the wheel, when the horfes fuddenly going off, threw him on the ground, and the wheel; paffing over his body, crushed him to death. The unfortunate mother was upon the cart when this unhappy accident happened.

On the 9th June, a porter was killed in the hold of a vefiel in Dundee Harbour. He was engaged unloading coals; and, the rope by which the iron pully was fupported giving way, the measure fell down upon him, and killed him inftantly.

A mafon, of the name of Stevenson, was lately killed by the blowing up of fome ftones, at Templeton, in the parish of Auchterhoufe. The match unfortunately com municated too early to the powder, and the explofion took place before he could get out of the way. He has left a wife and two children to lament his lofs.

On the 5th June, the Lord Provost, Magiftrates, and Council, agreed to give a prefentation to the Rev. Dr Andrew Grant, one of the minifters of Canongate, to be minifter of the College Church of this city, in room of the Rev. Dr Thomas Macnight, appointed one of the minifters of the Old Church.
