A bloody Sacrifice for thee,

Bereft of Confolation;

His fev'n laft Words, of all, deserve
Thy deepest meditation.

2. The first befpeaks the depth of love,
In which he pray'd to God above
For his embitter'd nation.
Father! forgive our ignorance,
At thy Son's Interceffion.

3. The fecond was, the great relief
He promis'd the repenting Thief,
Firmly affeverated.
Lord, bring us to thy Paradise,

When we are hence tranflated. 4.The third, the care he well apply'd, For his bleft Mother to provide

leave, JESUS.

By him whom he best loved. Provide, O God, for those we leave, When we are hence removed.

Jelu leiden, pein und tød. 1. TESUS' Sufferings, pains and death, JESU's Love fo lavish,

$. The fourth was, when he cry'd, Us poor duft, while we have breath

"I thirst!'

Alas, for whom. but for the curft, And all mankind's Redemption? Lord! true repentance grant, that we May answer thy Intention.

6. The fifth the Lord in anguish Spoke.

Why haft thou, God, my foul forfook,

"While ev'ry Terror preffes?" Lord! grant, our fouls from thy Diftrefs

May fetch all healing Graces.

Wholefomely do ravish.

O ye men, all Sin renounce,

Since we now are Christians; From that pit we mount at once Thro' our Lamb's affiftance. 2. JESUS to a Garden goes, Inward anguish feeling; Afk ye, what he first there does? Lo! he prayeth kneeling; His Soul in extremity,

Nothing could him gladden, See, with what Diftrefs for thee He chofe to be laden!

time,

Left ye be fupplanted;
Tho' the fpirit's wing would climb,
Soon the Flesh is daunted.
And indeed 'tis right for us,
Praying, to feek Favour;
Yea from meek Dependence thus
At no time to waver.

4. Whom all angels elfe adore,
JESUS in his brightness,
Him to firengthen at this hour
Flies an Angel witness.
Peace's angel Oh to me
Send in my laft Moments;
'Midft intenfe mortality,

Hide from me death's Torments.
5. Accufations false, and Scorn,
And the fervants fpittle,
By the faultlefs God are borne,
Pure in truth and title!
And thou finful and unjuft,

Think'ft it great invasion,
When fome tongue hurts by its thruft
Thy fmall Reputation.

6. Judas by his fin was chok'd;
The crowd, that not weighing,
Still the Governor provok'd,
Crying, Crucify Him!
But not Judas fin'd alone;
I've by my Offences,
Cruelty to my God shewn
Under Love's pretences.
7. JESUS bears his heavy Crofs,
Whereon he must suffer;
Simon fome part undergoes,
Yet not by free Offer.
Lord, in Crofs's Realm and field,
(Give me thy Grace only)
Loads I'll carry uncompell'd,
And not leave thee lonely.

8. Both thy Hands and Feet stretch'd forth,

Muft be contemplated;
The four Quarters of the earth
They have expiated.

Turk or Moor disclaiming ; Where thy Spirit finds a door, Grace is furely ftreaming. 9. Jasu, from thy dol'rous Tree My heart fomewhat catches; Thy whole Body's agony

Melts it and attaches. Let the blind and partial Jew Count fuch Chrift not comely! I will fwear allegiance true To this Figure homely.

10. He, when most in pain he was,
All things well adjusted,
Call'd to mind his Mother's case,
Her with John intrusted.
See, O man, thou daily keep

Juft Walk, and Love yearning
Towards God and Men, then fleep
Sweet at moment's warning.
11. JESU's grace does Paradife
Promife with an Amen

To one, who think on me! cries,

Elfe could put no Claim in. Therefore thou, whoe'er thou art, Still addrefs God's Mercies, Tho' demerit, on thy part,

Holds before thee Curfes.
12. JESUS all hath finished,
In himself connected
What in God's whole Book we read;
Nothing more's expected.
Weep not! the great Deeds of Chrift
All for us did merit :

I, did this Truth not subfift,
Had despair'd in spirit.
13. Soon a Roman foldier's fpear
JESU's Side cuts open;
Some (who could the fact aver)
Look'd at what did happen.
Blood and Water plenteously

Thence the earth bedewed;
Ev'ry fex and age hereby

Is to Blifs renewed.

14. Thy Corpfe bury'd, Lord! the | 2. At Six in the morning time,

dead

Had thee in their number.
Let mine when in the tomb laid,
Have a happy Slumber :
Then I'm fure, thro' thy wounds
pow'r,

It fhall, tho' it moulder,
When new-raised in thy hour,
Glorify its Builder.

15. JESU, I fhall bleffed be;
Yea, I'm fo already,
Since from Sin's dire pangs I'm free,
And its Iflues deadly.
'Twas thy Blood which me releas'd,
Precious, precious treasure!
Wherein my whole mind and breaft
Find their endless pleasure.
16. JESU, thy fore Passion is
To me perfect sweetness;
There's betwixt thy Miferies,
And my Heart, a Fitness;
When thereof I meditate,
My foul walks on Roses.
Grant me place in heav'n! of that
Now thy Hand difpofes.
17. JESU! who haft once been dead,
Liveft now for ever:
Need
Therefore I in all my

For no Aid endeavour,
But from thee, my faithful Lord
Who haft me redeemed,
Give me what thy Death procur'd!
Mighty I esteem it.

Chriftus der uns felig macht.
HRIST our bleffed Saviour,
From Sin separated,
Was for Sinners in the Night
As a thief committed;
Drage'd before a wicked Court,
And falfely accufed,
Laugh'd at, mock'd and fpit upon,
Terribly abused.

The Jews threat'nings breathing
Led him as a Rebel base

To Pilate the Heathen;
Who did find him innocent,
Without cause of dying,
Sent him to Herod the King,

Who did fcorn and try him.
3. At Nine was the Son of God
Scourg'd, his Body trembles;
And a crown of piercing Thorn
Tore his facred Temples;
With a purple Garment mock'd,
On all fides affailed,

And must bear the Crofs to which
He was to be nailed.

4. Then at Noon the Son of God
To the Crofs was nailed,
Where his fervent Pray'r and Blood
For our Sins prevailed:
The fpectators fhook their head,
Had him in derifion,
Till the fun-light mourning fled.
From fo fad a vifion.
5. At Three Jefus cry'd aloud,
God I am forfaken!
Soon was Vinegar and Gall
Offer'd, but not taken.
Then he yielded up the Ghoft,

Earth did quake with wonder,
And the Temple's veil was rent,
Rocks were cleft asunder.
6. At th'approaching Ev'ning-tide
Criminals bones were broken;
But the fpear pierc'd Jefu's Side,
For a lafting Token;
Which pour'd forth a double Flood
of a cleansing nature:
Both the Water and the Blood
Wash the guilty creature.

7. Jofeph, when the Eve was come,
Took his dearest Master,
Laid him in his ftately Tomb,
Hewn in alabaster;

Nicodems

Nicodem now void of fear,
Brought the richest spices:
Thus thefe holy Men paid here
Their laft Sacrifices.

8. Grant, O Chrift, thou fon of God!
Thro' thy bitter paffion,
That we be thy Smarts reward,
Joy in thy falvation;
That we always weigh the Caufe
Of thy Death and fuffring,
And for this, tho' poor we are,
Bring thee our Thank-off'ring.

JE

Efu's Crofs and fuff'rings fore,
Thy dear Lord and Saviour,
Christian Church! contemplate o'er,
Give him thanks for ever.
Till death eas'd him of his pain,
Think how he was wounded!
That thou might'ft, from guilt made
clean,

Be with grace furrounded.
2. He did not his charge forget,
Prov'd his poor Flock's Keeper:
Ere he went his doom to meet,
He held Pafchal Supper:
There he taught his little Train,
Cleans'd them by a Feet-bath,
His own Sacrament began,
Made the Cross a fweet path.
3. Jefus to a garden went

For Pray'r, these Acts ended;
Fell, thro' mind's embaraffment,
Flat on earth extended;
Thrice his Father he addrefs'd
With heart sharply troubled,
Bloody Sweat was from him prefs'd
By grief fo redoubled.

4. A more fad and doleful Cry
Earth and skies ne'er pierced,

Than what in his Agony
Was from Jefus forced!
For God's Justice unto him
Our Sin's fcore had placed,
Whatfoe'er from earliest Time
Young and old tranfgreffed.
5. Jefu's Death that Foe depos'd
From fway and advantage,
Who Death's power had, and us'd
To keep men in Bondage:
He th' Hand-writing tore, and eas'd
Confcience from its thunder,
The Partition-wall eras'd,

Rent the vail in funder.
6. Jefus is that grain of Wheat,
Which in death was bury'd,
That we, death's juft captives, might
Be to Life preferred:
This Grain much fruit 'fore our eyes
To God's Praife produces :
His Flesh he for meat fupplies,
For drink his Blood's juices.
7. Jefu! fince to Rule and fway
Thou art now advanced,
Our old Adam kindly flay,

The new be enhanced :
Draw our Mind up towards thee,
Stronger ftill and ftronger;
Nor the Life from God deny
To our fpirit's hunger.
