That Hand which for us on the beam

Was ftretch'd out, and appear'd fo pale ; That Hand, which, e'er thou went'ft away,

One faw thy chosen people bless; That Hand, by which, on Judg. ment-day,

Thy finners are to ftand by grace.

E who not right inly Loveth the Lord Jefus ; Yet would with Profeffion please us, As if the Crofs choosing; Would a faint be deemed, For fair Outfide be efteemed : Lo! fuch man weds a Bann,

His whole unblest carriage
Shews this hapless marriage.
2. Who now loves the Saviour,
Him as Head has taken,
And himself his Limb does reckon;

Yet himself does fep'rate,
When that Head infpireth,
And the Body with him stirreth :
He'll decay foon away,

Like a leaf half rotten
Blown about in Autumn,
3. Should one? and not willing!
That's a fpirit paltry

Deem'd in the eternal Country :

If one will 'bide honest,

S Make them booties of thy Paffion. Nor before God's Nation

O let not one 'mong us have a place
Who would not grow in grace;
Whofe Heart would not be quite re-
fign'd

To thy mind.

Have blot of Prevarication,
Then must he throughly be
To Him his Heart giving,
Who's th' End of our living.

Thou know'ft how of us thou'rt 4. Afks the Clay its Potter,

Gift of all gifts beft approved, Heavenly Prefent, abounding with grace! *

To himself Exiftence,

Yet in Thought roves to great distance,

Or will stray from that Way
Which his God thought likely,
Ev'n fome fteps obliquely.
5. Wherefore was the Jewish
Holy Theocracy

(Altho' bleft with many a mercy)
But a pompous leffon,

Of less fruit than Cumber,
Well adorned Torture-chamber?
'Caufe nought there one could hear,
But thou must! fo racking.
Strength and Will still lacking.
6. Our School at the feet of
Jefus the dear Mafter,
Deem Minds noble no Difafter:

What he us commandeth,
Are fuch Things entirely,
Which we would have done more
early;

Which we too now can do:
Gladder thus and bolder
Is none, than his foldier.

7. We are Slaves no longer,
But his Servants ready,

Who us bought by Payment bloody:

He could have compell'd us,

Yet thro' love refuses,

And Heart's motions rather chufes :
Only this certain is,

His Love binds us Debtors,
More than iron fetters.

8. O ye Fellow members!
Now we are enlisted,

(His Charms could not be refifted)

And his good fouls always
That to will are leaning,
Which they ought, and is his Mean-
ing.

Hear what's faid by th' Handmaid,
Whom one may entitle
Loving Church, tho' little.

19. Thus fhe fays, "Go forward,
"Will and can each Action,
"That can yield Him Satisfaction;
"And to all things further
"Be nor fit nor able;

"Count your Grace ineftimable:
"Go with th' wind of Christ's Mind
"In Grace-path and habit;
Eafy go and rapid!

OES it fo go in Pilgrim-path,
And in the Crofs's holy
Season,

As Jefus fore-declared hath ?
Then I fay Selah with good reafon.
Thee, Lord, I honour in thy Ways,
'Fore thee I proftrate lie or kneeling,
I find no terror in thy Face,
Whatever be with me thy Dealing.
Try Nature, as thy mind
Moft wholefome it fhall find.
Thro' fmooth and rough thou'rt
mine Upholder,

Thou know'ft beft after all, What yoke, what burden, shall Be fuitable to my weak shoulder. 2. That which now happens, O how ftrange

It seems to Reafon fo fhort-fighted?
It can't the things in order range,
Because the fenfes are benighted.
But to an Heart, that is refign'd,
And by felf-will no more restrained,
That all in all in thee does find,
To fuch, thy Way is foon explained:
And if it even not

In all things Light hath got,
Yet it is without variation

The fame; and does not add
More loads to make it fad ;
It 'bides in constant Refignation.

3. My One and All, my foul's beft Friend!

Thus I myself to thee deliver.
Whatever comes from thy dear Hand,
How hard it be, how ftrange foever;
I'll take it with a paffive heart,
And though I cannot fhout for glad.
nefs,

Yet it fhall neither give me fmart, Not fill my foul with anxious Sadnefs.

My Chief! what wilt thou do? I ftand, thy work to view; Thou haft this Path for me invented. I did moft certainly Give myself up to thee, Nor have I yet thereof repented.

[blocks in formation]

Grant my request, And let my breast

Soon find in thy Death conftant Reft. 3. Bleffed are the poor in spirit ; They shall the realm of Heav'n inherit,

Thy Mercy they find easily.
But all thofe, that are replenish'd,
And think they're rich enough, are
banish'd

From thy Kingdom's felicity.
Enrich our poverty,
Yet keep us poor like thee,

Jefu! give us

That noble heart, T'whom wealth does fmart, But Poverty delight impart. 4. They that mourn, bleft is their flation,

They find abundant Confolation,

Their Captain first that path did
tread:

He prevails, tho' Crofs he suffers;
Therefore to us that Cup he offers,
By which himself was perfected:
We can in no respect
Here harveft days expect,

Here is Weeping,

At the Lamb's Feaft
Is perfect reft,

Here is a vale of tears at best.

5. Blefjed are the meek in spirit, They fhall as Lords the earth inherit;

Tho' their true glory don't appear,
Yet by gentle Conversation,
They've given fufficient declaration
That to the Lamb's Mind they
adhere :

And as the first-born Lamb,
Whom they their Bridegroom name,
Lamb and Lion,

Is mild and low,

Yet pow'rful too;

Thofe of his realm are likewise so. 6. When proud hoftile band despises The poor fimplicity of Jefus,

And ridicules his tender Sheep:

Thefe

Thefe must oft look terrifying,
As they are not on wind relying,
But ever to the Body * keep:
Does proud Goliah ween
That David is too mean?

Of our Bridegroom;

O Lamb fo pure,
Thee we adjure

To make us thy clean Portraiture.

10. Bleft are they, whose heart embraces Will he mock him? The peaceful Method in all cafes,

A flint cuts thro'
The fcornful brow,
And lays the haughty Giant low.
Col. ii. 17.

7. Bleed are the fouls that hunger,
And with deep longing thirft and linger
For the most perfect Righteousness;
They are filled and replenish'd;
As he, who their falvation finish'd,
His fhare of Thirft experienc'd,has;
When from his Heart did burst
That Cry, I thirst, I thirst!

Who really

(To fave our fouls :)

So thirts, and he
That hungers thus, fhall faved be.
S. All the merciful are blessed;
When they are needy and diftreffed,
They fhall be cloath'd with Mercy
free;

Water to the poor afforded,
Is as a loving A&t * recorded,
And is rewarded gen'roufly.
He, who to th' indigent
Hath been beneficent,

His Children God will them de-
clare ;

By this name are they difcerned:
In robes of peace shall shine adorned
Thofe, who did follow peace with

care:

Who'd now not willingly
Bear rather injury?

Peace and concord

We have at heart,
This is our Art;
All gain by conteft got, is dirt.
11. Bless'd are they, who fuffer gladly
For doing good and living godly,

Who fay, Thou, Jeface art our
Lord,

We will suffer at thy Pleasure,
And fill th' appointed suff'ring's mea-
fure,

We love thee and don't think it

hard.
How bleft, O Jefu dear!
Are we, whene'er we here

So lead us on,
He is bleffed; We will not fhun,

But woe to them,
Who fcorn'd the fame,
For God remembers not their name,

[blocks in formation]

Suffer for thee!

Through all things after thee to run. 12. Bleft are they that are despised, In fcornful manner ftigmatized,

And for their Bridegroom's fake
defam'd.

If a Bride thinks it an honour
To take her Lover's name upon her,

Should we of our Lamb be
afham'd?

Far, far be this from us,
Come, ever welcome Crofs !

We are Chriftians;

And

The Shine is bright,

After Slander!

An humble Sense mean while within,
And folid feeling what is Sin,

But not to work fin, God forbid :

3. A mind to Lowliness inclin'd;
A gall-lefs Dove's unfpotted mind;

A mind that ftrives untir'd
For a true fpiritual Frame;
poor I am,
Shut up herein, that

From hurtful Fancies far retir'd. 4. I afk to be with all at Peace ; Still faithful the Lamb's Hymn t'exprefs;

In Prayers faithful too,

Then, then in Chrift we're finish'd For other fouls to him to speak,

quite.

14. Thus, while here, O let us ever
Be found in thee, without thee never!
Thou'ft lov'd us with eternal Love;
Thou haft woo'd us and allured,
Yea, out of love, e'en death endured:
Who else can thus his Kindness
prove?

O Love! we do love thee,
Though our love's properly

But an image

Of th' endless Love,
Wherewith above
Thou wilt regale thy faithful Doye.

[blocks in formation]

ITH tender longings and

WITH
love's smart,

With hundred tears fprung from the
heart,

Thy Flame I wait for here;
On this sweet Day for bleffings meant,
I wait the End of all complaint,
The Bridegroom's kind and open

Ear.

2. I afk a free clear state of Soul; In Spirit of my mind a full Recov'ry certify'd;

The En'my's plots and schemes to break;

To the Friend daily join'd anew:

5.
To myself present evermore ;
In readiness for thee each hour,

And thy each Beck and will;
In th' holy Sacrament all times
Touch'd evidently by his Beams,

Who doth my foul there feed and
fill:

6. A terror to the adverse part;
But to God's Friends a joy of heart,
A Servant of his train;
Ready in witneffing and blefs'd;
Refreshing, when I preach, confefs'd;

In Walking fimple, upright, plain : 7. To fouls who know that Mystery, Joyful to look upon, and fee,

Our Love how much He can;
For comfort of th' amaz'd with Guilt,
The children from the bottom spoilt,

In Jefus now a finish'd Man:
8. Entirely ferious, childlike too;
In all Effentials fix'd and true;
truft;
An Ear that one may
A hearty genuine Brother's heart,
To sympathize with ev'ry fmart,
Which chance fometimes 'mong
brethren muft:
