SERMON

PREACHED AT THE

BEFORE THE HONOURABLE

CHARLES BOONE, Efq;

Prefident and Governor of Bombay, &c. &c. Council.

BY

RICHARD COBBE, M. A.

Chaplain to the Honourable Eaft India Company.

ISAIAH LVI. 7.

For mine Houfe fhall be called an Houfe of Prayer

H

for all people.

AVING at length by God's affiftance, and the unanimous and hearty concurrence of its benefactors, raised this Church to that beautiful profpect in which we now behold it; what can we do better in reafon and gratitude, at this time and in this place thus joyfully met together, than render Almighty GoD our great benefactor our humble and hearty thanks for the fame? by praifing and adoring his moft glorious Name, not only for the bleffing which we this day commemorate, the mysterious Incarnation and Birth of our Saviour Chrift; but for affording us this occafion of fulfilling our joy, in that he hath enabled us to fet up the House of GOD, and to repair the ruins and defolations of it.

Many were the titles of honour in the Old Teftament conferred upon the Jewish Temple at Jerufalem, in order to keep up that refpect and reverence that was due to it; and in order to prevent any the least abuse or profanation of it: Accordingly we find it ftiled by GOD himself the tent which GOD had pitched among men; the hill of Sion which he loved; his dwelling; his courts; and his glorious fanctuary; a fair place; and the joy of the whole earth; the high and holy place inhabited by the high and lofty One; the prefence of GOD; and the place which GOD had chofen out of all the earth to put his Name there.
